I am thinking reducing the amount of speakers and electronics therefore selling my surround system centre and surround speakers and running a 2 ch system instead.

Anyone done this and happy with the sound?

I only used my 5.1 for movies.

It is gone, only 2 channel now, happy as can be...

I've recently done that and couldn't be happier. Yeah movies don't sound as good as they did with more speakers but it was a small sacrifice to make.
I rarely watch movies, but not a day goes by without me listening to some music.

If you are mostly using your system for movies, I'd suggest maybe looking into building a 2ch dedicated system and leave the surround sound.

I have multiple stereo and multichannel systems installed throughout my house.

I have a very large collection of multichannel music (including lots of concert material) and there's not a single track amongst them that I'd rather listen to in stereo.

So to the OP, no I would never consider "degrading" an existing multichannel system and turning it into two channel only.

If I were starting from scratch, looking to build yet another system, I might start with two channels, and expand later as budget would afford. And those initial two channels would consist of high-capability F L/R speakers that I would be very happy with until the system grew around it. Which is pretty much what I've done throughout my audiophile life as multichannel came into being. (Although I did skip the original Quad vinyl / 8-track craze - way back when.)

I can understand sticking to stereo-only due to space and budget limitations - especially if stereo music in expected to be the mainstay of one's listening. But I've grown too fond of multichannel to ever consider parting from it.

Jeff

I've done just that and am completely happy with my 2.2 system. Even for movies.

Dropped multichannel 5 years ago and haven't really missed it. I spend more on 2 channel than I ever did on my HT setup so there was no downgrade.

We have a 1080 projector and 96 diagonal electric screen in my soundroom. We use my 2 channel system with 2 subs for both music and movies.

I have many SACD's, some have multi channel sound tracks.

Not that one is better than the other, I just prefer the 2 channel sound...

Did it years ago, and never looked back.

Simply got tired of the same 12-14 rear "sound-effects"......phone ringing, dog barking, rain pounding, wind howling, floor creaking, leaves rustling...….ad nauseam.

Cheers, del Sol

I have two stereo and two surround systems in the house (as well as a problem I guess :) and listen to multiple formats Mini-disc, SACD (stereo an MC), DVD-A, CD, Blu-Ray Audio, DTS CD, R2R, vinyl .. I wouldn't want to give up any of them and luckily for now I don't have to. One thing though if its stereo I listen in stereo - I don't do that DSP stuff IMHO it ruins it totally.

If you have the room and the software I would recommend having both stereo and MC or even get a Pre/Pro that does a good job with stereo as well. Although I'm sure some would argue that doesn't exist

Happy Listening whatever the format

I have done it, and gone back, and then done it again, and gone back.

Currently I have a hybrid setup. It is a 2 channel setup that is also connected to my HT system in the basement. That is my dedicated space, and having a family means movies for me.

Eventually I will go back to just 2.1. And a condo!

I went 9.1 couldn't be happier.........

If I had to go 2.1 it would be a very sad day.
