Hi all,

I'm not on forums very often but I need some questions answered and hoping this may be the place. I'm a musician. My audio gear is entry level but I love how it sounds.

My son is 9 & plays guitar and has asked for some vinyl for Christmas and I have some vintage gear to pass to him as well, it needs some cleaning & maintenance.

Cheers

Welcome to CAM. How can we help? Are you looking to do the maintenance on the gear yourself?

Welcome. If you have any questions or would like us to spend your money please feel free to ask.
It might be a plan to list the equipment you want to pass along and any issues you have with it.
Again, welcome.

Thanks guys there are 4 things I'm after right now:

1. Broken head shell on my Dual 504. Somehow the stem on that s/m dial on the head shell snapped. Looking for a Dual specialist. This turntable works so well, the last time I had is serviced was when Robert Tracy from All-In-One Electronics did it. They closed back in 2011 and I read here that Klaus has now passed on. Right now it looks like either take it to Ring Audio, who are well-rated or Doctor Dual in St. Thomas (my parents live in London, I could drop it off). Mixed reviews on National Sound. If anyone knows a solid Dual repair place in the GTA it would be great to get a contact.

2. Pioneer SX-680 Receiver, cleaning/maintenance. I'm giving this to my son for Christmas because he asked for "KISS Destroyer, not on Spotify but on those big black things you have that spin around." Going to set him up with his own system.

3. KLH Model 17 speakers, wood cabinet buffed/blemishes taken care of. Part of the Christmas gift.

I heard on the Repair Shops thread that Dan Santoni is good, so he seems worth a try, at least for #2 & 3...

4. A decent used entry level turntable - again for Christmas. I found this guy on Kijiji he seems decent and replied quickly:

You can get the old TT repaired (could easily be in the $200 range ) or you can buy him a new Project - they're fun and competent and can be had for under $300 if you look hard enough ( there were great specials on these at 2001 audio and video last Christmas - not sure about this year ). If looking at other budget brands pay attention to the tracking force used - should be under 2 grams. The garbage tables have a higher tracking force - protect your vinyl investment and avoid these.

I believe that Robert Tracey of All-In-One Electronics is now at Executive Stereo on Avenue Road fixing Duals.

The Dual headshell probably can't be fixed reasonably but replacements should not be hard to find or particularly expensive.

Thanks for the info guys! Hollinger, I'll look into the Project. The old TT in need of repair is actually my own. I'm kind of attached to it lol.

Welcome to CAM HiHat!

There's a Dual 504 for sale on Ebay at the moment for $78 USD incl shipping. Looks to have the headshell intact. Might be worthwhile for spare parts.

I'm no dual expert or aficionado but the headshell/sled can be had for $20-$40 and replacing it should be a diy thing (set screw maybe?)

The 504 is a semi-automatic table, single play only - so you don’t need the mounting adaptor/sled with the S/M selector (single/multi), just get a normal one, if I was local to you I could help you out...

Yeah he's there I just spoke with him. Their rate is $75/hr, which, given that it's Executive, I'm guessing is somewhat on the higher end in terms of price, but still within reason?

It seems my top choices to repair the Dual are either Robert at Executive or Doctor Dual in St. Thomas...

You might be putting more $$$ into it then its worth. They aren't exactly rare. Easy to find a working replacement for cheap.
