It's getting about that time to replace the EL34 tubes in my amp. I'm looking for middle of the road, reasonably priced current run replacements (please not NOS). What do I consider reasonably priced, you might ask? 25-35 / per tube. Reissue Mullards? Electroharmonix? JJ?

I have tried the Mullard reissues but I find that the JJ`s are better sounding and I have been using only them for quite a long time now and I am very satisfied with their sound Quality

So i used to have an el34 based amp. I tried the stock line magnetic tubes (pretty decent)....some electroharmonix el34s...pretty sweet in the midrange and some JJkt77s...which were very nice...but had some reliability issues.

JJ KT77 from tubestore.com.
Cheap, excellent sounding, more drive and energy than any EL34, can sound a bit bright depending on the system. Never had reliability issue with my set, I recommend thetubestore they will stand behind them.

The Gold Lion KT 77 is a great tube, but quite a bit beyond the stated budget.

EH EL34 is quite decent for a budget tube so this would be my recommendation.

What amp is this?

Op,

I have used and really like the Tung-Sol EL34B tubes. A sweet sound. Worth a try.

I definitely agree, the JJ KT77 is the one to get. This tube will wake up any EL34 based amp and in my experience is even better sounding than the hallowed =C= 6550 tubes. I've used them in many different amps and have always raved about them and have had no reliability issues. The SED EL34 have been way less than stellar. If you are using an auto bias amp look into the Tungsol reissue 7581a, they are magic in the right application.

Watch out for KT77s, unless you have good reason to think they'll work. I tried a set ( of 8 ) after checking with my amp's manufacturer. They didn't last long, and one tube took out a resistor when it overheated. The tech who did the repair suggested that EL34s would last longer and push the amp less.

I've pretty much always used JJ tubes. They've been reliable in my application*, and although SEDs do sound a bit better, they're not worth a large price difference IMHO.

* Not counting the KT77 debacle.
