What mcintosh amps are good? I've always drooled over mc462 or the mc1.2kw or 1.25kw amps and the c1100 preamp. Are these actually worth the money? If not, what should I be looking at?

Now you've done it! Opened a can of worms. You will find two schools of thought; one side will say McIntosh are not near worth their price (let's call them Republicans). Then there is the other side where McIntosh are great (let's call them Democrats).

That pretty well describes it. Two diametrically opposite points of view, defended strongly by their respective group. This you should decide for yourself.

The best thing is to audition them, compare them against alternatives, and decide. To the positive is that any McIntosh purchase tends to keep its value. I currently am using a pair of 754s and quite like them. they are nice, but a little bit "thin" compared with a pair of Haflers I had been using. But they are clean, accurate and tube-like. So they are a good match with my music tastes (from Abba to Queen with a lot of jazz in between).

I think, compared to the price of new McIntosh gear, there are a LOT of alternate choices.

Like any other audio equipment, it all comes down to your personal taste.

No one here can tell you what you like, only you know that answer.

What is the best/better equipment is subjective.

Good luck on your choices, just remember, choose what you like not what we like.

I like McIntosh, don't own any, but would if the price was right...

I think McIntosh is very competitive price wise with many other high end components. :D

it specially depend on the speaker you want to drive with McIntosh amp . the 1200 s are very nice , but do you need that kind of power, well over 1200 watt.
McIntosh are great amplifier and about the best return on investment your money can buy.

I like my McIntosh gear and it is bullet proof. Our main system has been used everyday in our home for over twelve years, without any issues. Everyone who hears it agrees the sound is commanding and clean. While it may not be the latest, state-of-the-art equipment I have always enjoyed the sound it produces. And, being used equipment, it is good value for money, no doubt it will be a good value moving forward. Listen to what other members have to say, respect there opinion, but let your ears determine what you like.

I've heard the top of the line MC 2KW power amp along with its TOL preamp, dac, and driving their reference the XRT2.1K speaker's system. They are good and as the matter of fact, it's better than good. Except for the intrusion of its inherent house sound which is slightly warmer than neutral compared to some other high-end system that I've auditioned. Does it worth the money? certainly, if you like that kind of sound. The other system that I've listened to lately is worth a little bit more than the McIntosh system that I've mentioned above which was very neutral and natural sounding while using the DCS Vivaldi digital system as the source.

I loved my McIntosh amp, until it went up in smoke.

Made me suddenly wish I had bought a Bryston.

Hi dmitchell,

Any amplifier can fail. Did you get it repaired by a competent technician? How old is it?

I am/was (?) an authorized McIntosh repair technician and still talk to them. They have been helpful in sorting a few hack repairs done by bad techs.

Well, only the cubed series sound any good. You are talking about some seriously expensive amplifiers these days.

It was three years old. It was an MA6600. My buddy who has the same amp had it go up in smoke the same way. Went back to my dealer and saw a palatte of McIntosh amps going to the repair depot in Montreal.
