Looking for recommendations for a small passive bookshelf for my desktop - no more than 7 inches wide for under $400. Will be powered by a Linn LK85 (63 w at 8 ohms). Thanks!

Hi,

Would recommend NHT Super Zeros if you can find a pair.

Cheers,
David Neice

Gibby's has Paradigm Atoms on sale for 300$ ( https://gibbyselectronicsupermarket.ca/ ... m-monitor/ ). Less than 7" wide and hard to go wrong for the price.

NO AFFILIATION - JUST A REGULAR GIBBY'S SHOPPER

Another option is the Cambridge Soundworks Model 11 (or Model 12) system. This consists of a pair of small satellite speakers (about 4" wide), and a 7" woofer-in-a-suitcase. Includes a 3-channel compact amplifier, with electronic crossover built-in. Good info here:

I've been using a Model 11 at my PC for a few months, with a Chromecast Audio device as a source. Sound quality is excellent. These sold for US$750 in the early 1990s, and can be found used for the bargain price of about Cdn$$250.

You did not tell us your music preferences. With that said, if you like "British" sound, you might consider Missions. I have both M70's (great imaging) and M71's (larger bass, a little less resolution). I use them for near-field listening in my office. Powered by a Mistral DT-307B the M71s work great in vocals and jazz. They can rock as well, heck even electronic dance..... I sold off much more expensive speakers (like MA Bronze) because they are just more "natural". The trick with near-field, is to use speakers that are able to respond at low volumes....something my Missions do well.

Another benefit to M70s is that they are front ported and really well isolated so they can play in an enclosed space, hang em from walls, etc.

Good luck with your choices.

Tom

Second James_W recommendation.
I've been using Totem Mites with a Teac mini receiver and am very happy with the near field performance. I tried my Totem Model 1 Sigs for a while. They were much better but way over your price point.

I haven’t heard them but if I was buying a pair I would get these Alta solos. They seem like an amazing deal.

I read some reviews on those which seem really positive. I just couldn't come up with a good reason to buy the speakers ( too many already ).

A good reason? I used those up a long time ago with my wife. Now it's all eye rolls.
