So not being an expert in Tannoys...was hoping for a few opinions / advice.
Looking to buy a local pair of Tannoy SRM 15x speakers..They look like they are
in mint condition.

Hard to find a ton of info on them..

Whats a fair price for them ?

Any personal reviews ?

Cheers

Dave

Well, the SRM = Super Red Monitor series is from the mid-1980s, preceding the SGM series, which in turn preceded the DMT series, after which, alas!, Tannoy stopped producing large-format studio monitors.

Their value is precisely what you're willing to pay for them and what the owner is willing to sell them for. But a considerable part of their value is their vintage cachet.

In terms of audio quality for the investment, I personally find them over-priced compared, for example, to the DMT series.

Any chance this pair, located in Calgary, and currently listed on eBay, is the one you're considering?

Note you'll need a subwoofer if you want deep bass: they weren't designed to go very low on their own.

And for what the owner is asking, I'd much prefer a pair of System 15 DMT II or System 215 DMT II for a small fraction of the price. You won't get that "vintage Tannoy" cool factor, but you'll get a better speaker, in a much better-built cabinet, that doesn't need a subwoofer, and that has greater sensitivity and higher power handling.

So. . .it all depends on your priorities. . .

Dr. Joe - thanks for sharing.

I've always wanted Tannoys - but don't have the space or the room for them.

I have two pairs of the 15” with a third coming this week. In terms of bang, for the buck I would, look at the 3828 driver which can be had for less than $1000. I personally wouldn’t pay more than $2500 for those speakers. Heck for $2500 you can get a pair of excellent condition gold monitors with the alnico magnets. Not sure those srm have the alnico version. Likely not.

I have a pair of the Super Red SRM12X and love them.

They are super musical, and detailed....having said that they will def pick up all the bad alongside the good. But the good sounds amazing.

I've both read and experienced that they can be on the brighter side of things (depending on the source, and rest of your gear) but since getting an all-tube set up, for me, it's toned them right down to where I just love listening to them. Very efficient speakers as well.

What was said about the subwoofer I find as well to be true. I use a sub and it blends splendidly and fills out the low end perfect.....but without the sub the Tannoys are def lacking a tad in that department.

The 15” driver is plenty big enough to make decent bass. The bass response is a function of the enclosure size and design. These are on the smaller size so it’s possible the bass is a little lean. The same driver in a bigger enclosure should give better bass. On paper the driver goes down to 23hz!

Congrats. I am still exploring the possibility of these amazing speakers. If you have the time then post them in the forum for showing off your setup, I’d like to get a good look at these bad boys.

I have to say the Tannoys sound amazing...Still fine tuning cables etc...

Just picked up the Bryston 7BSST's as well.

Overkill amp wise for the Tannoys. Considering a Tube amp setup.

We shall see.

Cheers

Try an el84 pp amp, it’s a delicious combination.
