Sorry I'm a digital dummy. If i have a computer that does not support hi res, and connect it to an external dac, the DAC will play the file completely correct? I am not hampered by playing the music in the computer. Right? No upsampling or other trickery. M DAC is good, but the old MacBook I've been using I'm not crazy about. Is there a better source that would work better with my NAD M51 DAC?

Does a digital music player have any benefit over using a computer when it comes es to streaming services like Today?

Thanks, I hope all that makes sense.

your Mac will support hi rez. You have to go to your MIDI settings in Launchpad and change the output settings.
A streamer is a purpose built computer so there can be gains in that. It depends more on how you want to access your music. Most streamers only have apps for IOS/Android so you will need a tablet or phone to control it.
If your physical set up makes using the Mac inconveinient then a streamer may be the answer for you. You can run a Mac from an app as well.
