is it just a USB-Coax converter you need then? There are a few threads with comments on various models, including this one

Hard to find one with out bells and whistles but I recently became aware of the Brennan B2 server (500 dollars) very simple box . It has 2 (USB) 1 (micro USB) 1 (spdif out) .Check it at Thebrennan.com to see if it suits you.

there is no analogue signal that passes through it, thus no dac.
do you need a media player on the device?

Actually a Squeezebox Touch would do this as well.

What about the Sony UBP-X800.
It's a transport - CD, SACD, DVD-A, DVD-V, BluRay.

It will play from a USB key or USB hard drive.

I don't think it will connect to a computer USB.

It has 3 outputs: coaxial, video/audio HDMI out and audio only HDMI out.

No built-in DAC.

You can play SACD and get DSD output from audio HDMI and into a DAC if the DAC has a HDMI input that will receive DSD.

All this and it plays movies too.

Interesting question. I think it came out before there were drives that size. I have all my music on a server and play from that so I don't know.

Playing from an external HDD is always dicey and an issue for most transports.

Touch is pretty buggy with USB. I also wouldn't recommend it if you have music on a hard drive and not on a network.

I was going to suggest the Sony BDP-6700.
But the remote is a bit toy.
For use with a USB stick, it will need an HDMI cable and a monitor.
Picture quality from this Sony unit, with regular 480p DVD's, is quite impressive.
However, for a smart TV, I use a chrome book with an HDMI port.

In terms of a CD or SACD transport, have you had a chance to compare any of the Sony units ?

Sony BDP 6700 vs UBP-X800 vs UBP-X1000es ?

.
