RCA created the 6L6 (after they licensed the KT66 design from Marconi-Osram) and IMHO they happen to sound the best, although any North American 6L6 will sound good. The 6L6 family also includes the 807, 1625, 6BG6G, 5881, 7027, 5932, and 6V6 power tubes, and of course the KT66 which was released some time after the 6L6.

The Russian version sounds OK too. Don't know if the Chinese make one, but somehow I've always felt their fireworks to be a better deal cost-wise as they seem to have the same results.

Here's the comparison chart of currently made 6L6 tubes. Be aware that his findings were solely based on the guitar amp application. As one poster said the RCA made ones if you can find them are the best sounding of the lot either in audio or guitar amp application. The Russian tube is very good too although you have to be careful when pairing it with any tube amp out there as they tend to sound a little lean and brittle. Caveat most of the 6L6 that I came across are mostly microphonic I think they manufactured them this way to be used with the guitar amp that has an overdrive and reverb options.

I noticed that Issue 13 of Vacuum Tube Valley has a 6L6 shootout, too. One of the tubes they assess is the Mullard EL37.

This is followed in Issue 14 with a 12AX7 shootout, for anyone interested.

Russian Tung Sol 7581 work well in my 6L6GC amp
- hope I don't break it!
Can tell there's more 'force' in that tube cf. JJ 6L6GCs.
