You have 3000$ to spend on a system to play digital files from a mac server.
The speakers are Totem model 1 Signature. The listing space is 7’ x 9’ from a 12’ by 9’ room. The music is mostly rock, west coast hip hop and some jazz.
What would you do?

Newer “all in one”?
Older separate with a DAC?
Something else?

Benchmark dac1 with USB DAC $500
Used integrated. Brands I personally would be very interested in:
Hegel
Wyred for sound
Rogue Audio

It’s good to separate the dac to keep your system future proof. The DAC1 is to my ears still an incredible dac. It might not have the resolution of the latest chips but I don’t know if it makes that much of a difference.

....oh another good buy would be
The Cyrus dac/preamp qx version $1500 used
A Cyrus power amp

That combo would be around $3000

For those speakers, I would aim for at least 100 watts per channel, and that pretty much means you're limited to solid state. Fortunately there are lots of very good, modern SS integrateds around at reasonable prices. In this case I would like to keep as much as possible for the DAC, with the lower end of spending at around $850. That's approximately the price of a Schiit Bifrost Multibit.

I would not go looking for older converters. Older amplification is another story, but unless you have a useful amount of experience already, there is a lot of learning to do. That can get expensive.

I have become a fan of the all in one; just find that you get more for the same money spent on seperates. The dac modules only become obsolete if they no longer meet the users needs and then it doesn’t make the amp obsolete. An out board dac would have the same life span.

I also suspect these are the wrong speakers for this space. However there are small monitor speakers (BBC designs) that are perfect (ls 3/5 variants). Most are a bit more amp friendly - ie easier to drive and less expenditure required. You'll still need solid state though.

Rogue Cronus magnum ii is around 100wpc and the new Cary sli-100 is also 100wpc, both are tube integrated amps.

Totems do like tubes. Audioville in Montreal used to demo them with C-J, to great effect. But the only amp I have heard with the 1 Sigs is the Moon W5LE, now pretty much unfindable. ( I say that hoping someone will correct me  :D )

I used to own a pair of Totem Forests which I had paired with the Rogue Cronus Magnum, and they sounded quite good with this amp but they require more power ( or current) to make them sing.
My brother in law once had an original pair of Totem model 1 signatures that he powered with Classe' cam 350 mono blocks and boy did those little boxes kick ass. Like I said they love power.
