For many years considered the best speakers under 5000$! Too bright? Definitely not! I had the chance to make the comparison when the 1.7 came out and the 1.7 is much brighter. Both still sound amazing when well paired with good amps and preamps. Many for sale? Well, many were sold and now that the 1.7 has been updated to the 1.7i, lots of 1.7 are available for cheap to those who wish to upgrade, as in my opinion, the 1.7 is superior in pretty much every way. Still, both are absoluetly great values, with very little servicing that can done at home in one night, so you're good for another 20 years!

Bring an amp that doubles output into 4 ohms, and you’ll be thrilled. Some tubes somewhere in the chain (I had tubes in my DAC) and they deliver.

Best speakers I ever owned.

MMG’s were fantastic too, but the 1.6’s did bass to 50hz

The 1.6 are the best deal right now out of the magnepan line up due to depreciation, I own a pair myself. They can be had for under a $1000. Not too transparent, they are incredible speakers.

Had MAgnepan Is early production model, low serial number for many years. Now 1.6 qr. pair it with fast servo sub below 50-60 Hz, the best sound I ever had.

I previously had 1.6, good sound at a reasonable price point, but space was an issue foe me.

What you will soon discover with maggies is that they are VERY revealing speakers. If you have a low quality part in your audio chain that is characterized as bright or dark the maggies will make that stand out more than normal. As well, they tend to be very revealing towards poor quality tracks (like most high end speakers are). So to summarize no they are not bright, they let you know the true characteristics of your system.

I have the Magnepan.7 and these rival speakers many times their cost. It’s been said many times but they need some seriously good current. Nothing touches these for drums and acoustic instruments. They really aren’t that difficult to place. The sweetest treble I’ve ever heard. Everyone should own a pair as a reference point to audio nirvana. :D

Audio Research uses Magnepans to benchmark there top end tube amps. That simple statement says a lot...

Just curious to ask.
I am using 1.7i.
How does ATC SCM19v2 compares to the 1.7i? I am thinking of buying this ATC for more general (average quality) recordings.

Very different speakers. Actually magnepan is always going to sound very different to any dynamic speaker. You’ll likely find the Maggie’s will have better detail, much larger soundstage. The ATC should be better for smaller ensemble pieces and have greater dynamic punch. The Maggie’s have plenty of dynamics though. Between the two the 1.7i will impress more I think. As always, depends,on taste, room, music etc..

They are virtually impossible to directly compare from speaker size to bass response. The only quality they share is the need to be paired with a proper amp. I've had Magnepan 1.7, 3.6R and ATC SCM 7, 10SE, 19 v.2, 40 v.2. I'm drawing a blank on how to provide insight between the two other than one sounds much bigger and the other has more depth but in a smaller scale. I don't think either speaker is very forgiving.
