Over the years I have accumulated

Mcintosh MCD1100
Mcintosh C500T
Pass Labs XA60.5's
Tannoy Kensingtons

Now my room isn't the best, kinda wide open and hardwood floors, but the system only sounds good, not great.

Is it possible that there could be an issue with a component?

I purchased everything used or demo from dealers, and there isn't anything "obviously" wrong to me. I've tried some room treatments, different cabling, power conditioning/filtering, and yes my hearing is good. Every once in awhile it seems to sound better, but it's rare and I wonder if my mind is playing tricks.

Got a good chunk of coin tied up in this, and I'm not feeling it.

Anything in particular that you don't like? What else have you owned in the past to compare with your current setup?

Spending more money almost always gets you better sound but proper synergy turns systems from good to great. Since you've already tried room treatments I won't recommend the obvious.

The problem is the amp. Pass labs is much overated...

Better match with your speakers would be a nice Shindo or Leben.

I can relate to what you are saying. Though I didn't have your investment into my larger system I was finding that a much smaller 2nd system was providing more enjoyment. I tore it all down and purchased new amp, table and speakers based on what I have long wanted. I am no longer listening to the system but just enjoying music again.

Howz about a turntable that looks sorta like the Millenium Falcon? LPs have that 'magic' that you're missing IMHO...

Source. See if you can try a current DAC out from your player. Bet a Benchmark or comparable would be a very different experience from the built in. Give it at least 3 days on to behave.

I'm pretty sure its not the gear or the room and for heavens sake it not the cables!

Lets start with the source, what is your primary source of music and what type of music do you listen to most?

Try a 2018 dac, if it doesnt sing more like this then it s the amp.... sell the Pass labs and buy something to make the Kensignston sing...Shindo, Leben,...

+1 for the source.
I have my system to a point where I know how good it can sound with certain recordings.
That goes for the turntable, CD, streaming or computer audio recordings.
Do you ever have moments where you love the sound?

You have to have at least 15 posts....before your system sounds decent! Just kidding.

What is it that you think you’re not feeling? Is your setup too forward or laid back...and what do you listen to mostly?

We need more information to suggest anything worthwhile.

Spending lots of $$$$ does not necessarily bring good sound.
The reverse is often true.
Also, synergy matters.
Amp might be sterile sounding.
Get old McIntosh instead.
Speakers, I would go with 15" Tannoy instead, old ones, made before 1984 and restored;
Much better.
Preamp might be too "slow" in that particular setup.
Really have to try different things, mix and match.

I feel your frustration. It could be something is not working as it should. Also, did you audition the boxes first or did you just buy them on reputation? Is there any way to swap a cheaper component to see if one of those boxes isn't delivering the goods?
Personally I've always been indifferent to MacIntosh products - not a sound I'm into. Maybe you feel the same?

Does it sound kind of soft, not dynamic and not 3D? Sort of big but not focused?

I have always preferred tannoys with tube amps. I have had several pairs. I like single ended tube amps but tannoys own tube amps were push pull 6550 types.

I have found that solid state amps sounded cold with tannoy. But maybe just my experience.

I see you live in Calgary. I do as well. If you were interested to getting together let me know.

Best regards,

Simon
