I had the 660S on my shortlist but couldn't find a pair to try out - so I opted for the Massdrop 6xx (HD650) instead - better the devil you know...

It's on order and should arrive in April.

April? You could walk/swim to the Sennheiser factory in Germany faster. Why so long?

Waiting for reviews to come in for their new closed backed HD 820

It's a Massdrop thing and for the price, I was prepared to wait for them - The drop for the HD6xx which are actually modified HD650 phones ended in December and I believe that Sennheiser takes three months to manufacture and deliver the phones to MD.

Ship date from MD is April 28. Some Sennheiser drops have taken 6 months in the past.

OP - apologies for jumping this thread but if you are visiting the GTA, BBR https://baybloorradio.com/sennheiser-hd660s-headphones seem to have the HD660SS in stock.

The drivers on the HD6XX are the exact same as HD650's. The only difference is the colour (HD-6XX are black while HD650's are grey).

Although Tyll is a great reviewer, I would not go solely by his recommendations. For one, headphone fit and comfort is an obvious personal matter. Secondly, sound preferences vary wildly. If the Sennheiser 6xx family is preferred, I strongly recommend taking some time to try on and listen to the HD600, 650 and 660S before making any buying decision. Isn’t this hobby just fun...

The Massdrop HD6xx is a HD650 with a few minor changes. Most notably, the Cable is terminated with a 3.5mm TRS connector and is shorter than the stock HD650 cable. The HD6xx color is also different but this is essentially a HD650 at a reduced price and extended delivery time.

The HD6XXs are my first set of cans after a few years of good quality loudspeaker setups. I have to say, I am pretty disappointed, they are fine, but hardly the same world as a set of Totem Forests with decent electronics behind them. I have a Schiit Bifrost DAC and a Schiit Magni 2 Uber amp paired with top quality digital files and a good USB cable. I find the lows underwhelming at best and the imaging okay but nothing special. Perhaps I am being unrealistic in expectations for a sub $1k set of gear, but this just seems pretty "meh"...

Thinking about trying some different cans, perhaps Audeze or Oppo.

This may go against popular opinion, but I tried a pair of HD660S at The Headphone Bar a couple months ago, and I loved them. Out of all the headphones I tried (a pair of Audio-Technicas, Meze 99 Classic and Neo, Grado SR60e, the HD660S and HD598), the 660's spent the most time on my head. They just seemed so damn detailed. Had I been able to afford the price tag ($680, IIRC), I probably would've picked them up on the spot.

However, that was my first real foray into open headphones after using closed-back on-ears for a long time, having no real previous experience with mid- or hi-fi headphones, so they may be a downgrade for some people. I've since had a bit more experience with open-backs (my go-to pair at home is the HD 598SR), but haven't had a chance to listen to them since then. However, they're still on my list for another solid listen when I have a chance, along with some Beyerdynamics (if I can ever source a pair).

With the right amp behind them the HD6XX are really great. I have heard the HD650 a few times and feel they are pretty similar (if not exact) but the HD6XX is obviously at a better price.

The HD6xx price reduction is actually a modified HD650 mobile phone that ended in December.
