Ive been able to spend a bit of time with my new D2.
These are just some preliminary thoughts.
This thing is big..........and beautiful.
Design and engineering and build quality is top notch. ( Remember the price of this thing)
Sound quality straight out of the box is phenomenal, with all kinds of opportunity to upgrade if you choose.
If you are in the market for a DAC anywhere close to the price of this thing, my 2c is put it on your short list.
The D2 is really really good.

It sounds phenomenal compared to what? I don't doubt it does. But since it's impossible to audition, more.comparative notes would be helpful.

I have been in this hobby for 40 years. Worked in the industry at retail and distribution levels. Built amps, preamps, speakers, buffers etc. owned a lot of gear.
Its just my opinion that the D2 is a really good sounding piece of gear. But its not an unfounded one.

Brooster,
The photos on the site show Siemens tubes, is that what it comes with? If so, that's $300 worth of tubes alone.
Also curious how caps can be swapped with no soldering, very cool, but very niche market!
Also, is DSD only for DSD playback, or is there a benefit with normal playback?

I have a modded MP-D1 and I'm a huge fan. I can only imagine what this would sound like.

I havnt popped the lid on my unit yet, so cant confirm about the stock tubes, but Im pretty sure they arent Siemens. Gary Huang indicated the Siemens gold pins would be an upgrade.
About the caps. I think there is a picture posted but you can see that it is a type of screw terminal. Just loosen the terminals and you can swap caps in and out in no time. Ive used the stock Obligatos in other applications, and I think for the money they are really good but there are better caps.
A note. The DAC is fully balanced. But if you are running single ended it is not necessary to swap out the full compliment of tubes or caps if you want to make a change. You only need to swap to 2 tubes or 2 caps. Thats pretty cool.
It is unfortunate that its not easy to demo the unit. I dont have anything on hand that is remotely close to the sound quality of the D2, particularly a D1 so its a little difficult to provide comparisons. Once a few people get a hold of this DAC though, I think the consensus will be that it is a super value. Thats my 2c anyway.

I had a chance to hear a D2 this weekend but had other things going. I'm running 2 D1's with the 6922 tubes, and love them.

Brooster, thanks for posting this. I have been looking for a new DAC for awhile, and this has every feature I want. The price is in the ballpark too!

I do have two questions:

1. does it ship direct from China?
2 is the preamp function simply the front switch and will determine which set of outputs are in use?

I'm given to undertand that Garry is in town (Edmonton) and has indicated he may be dropping by the store. If that happens I will make an attempt to posit any questions you may have about the D2.
Just post them here and/or messgae either me or the 3dB CAM entity privately and we'll do what we can.

Yes it ships direct from China via DHL.
I picked mine up at the airport. It took about 6 days to arrive.
Their are 2 sets of single ended outputs. One of the sets is controlled by the preamp so you have volume control.
No volume control for balanced output though.

Very interesting design. Has anyone had a chance to compare to some others like the Yulong da8 mkii and Auralic Vega?

There is a review on the MP site comparing the D2 to the D1. I had never heard the D1 so was interested. I am sure other comparisons will come along.

I owned the D1 and thought it was excellent. I have the D2 on order now.

It just showed up via DHL yesterday. Haven't had a chance to hook it up yet, but I at least got it unpacked. It's quite big for a DAC.
