I am currently in the market for a new phono stage to replace the Rothwell I am currently using.

I am running a Dynavector XX-2 mounted on a Wilson Benesch ACT 2 and VPI Aries 1.

Some suggestions that have been offered to me include Brinkmann, Artemis Phono PL-1 Tube Phono Stage, Nagra BPS, Leema Acoustics, UK , Avid HiFi – UK, Whest and EAR-834P.

There are also Einstein, Rosner & Son and Ypsilon…but these are a little more than I am willing to spend right now.

Does anybody have any experience with any of the names mentioned...or perhaps other recommendations...

The guiding principal would be 'musical & engaging' rather than '“precise and hyper detailed presentation."

Perhaps it is useful to mention that I use a tube preamp (Blue Circle BC3000) and a pair of Scarlet Audio "Pearls" which are single ended 300B monoblocks.

My understanding is that, when it comes to phono stages, SS generally gives a much lower 'noise floor'...

Not really true with the noise floor, and tubes vs ss...
I've just switched from a ss phono pre, to a tubed phono pre...same manufacturer.
With the tubes, I can't tell it's powered up until the needle drops. Tube dependant I'm sure? But no noise, hiss, hum at all...I thought I had connected something wrong!

Which manufacturer...and what cartridge are you using with it?

How about a Blue Circle phono stage. Maybe some synergy with your pre?

Good suggestion...I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks.

I have a xx2mk11 and have run it both with a Zesto Audio Andros and now a Simaudio Evolution 610 lp. The cartridge works well with both of these phono stages. Don't be afraid to load the cartridge higher than 100. I preferred 400 on both phono stages, so some experimentation might pay off for you.

One reviewer preferred 1000. I do find the ss quieter and will soon be running it balanced. Seeing that you have a Blue Circle pre, I would definitely look at one of their phono stages. TT Weights in TO now sells them.

Yes, I have some experience with this.
I went to hell and back matching up my .30 mV Dyna XV-1s , same output as your XX-2. Very low mc outputs, because I play my speakers very loud.
Ended up with the Artemis PL-1, dedicated low mc. I preferred the live sounding music over several others I tried.
And, yes, SS much quieter than tubes, a tradeoff I prefer.

'musical & engaging'
I like to suggest for hallow state BAT VP 10 se/dept charge and Rhea. Solid state is a Aqvox.

IIRC my guy at Hammertone Audio used more than a few Dyna carts and really liked them through the Allnic tubed phono preamps! So that might be a thought - I suspect that the 1201 at $3K might be in your wheelhouse (it was in mine) although the TOTL unit at $33K might be out there a bit (although he tells me they've sold more than a few!)

just a thought/option

I appreciate all the responses and this is not the first time that Allnic has been put in the same sentence as Dynavector.

It occurs to me that perhaps if I wrote to Dynavector themselves they may have some recommendations for me.

It is quite overwhelming just how many choices there are...it would certainly be an advantage to audition anything that I was considering purchasing.

Probably what will happen is that I'll just stick to the Rothwell...at least that is a known quality...and works quite well...

I have the same cart as you and just recently sold my Fosgate Signature in favor of a Allnic h-1201 tube phono. I picked the allnic for my system as it seemed a better fit for me as i have auditioned the more expensive allnics and they are pretty sweet. (word of caution though tube swapping is limited) In my system its what i want and has the synergy with the dynovector.

Since the Dynavector you have although dynamic but certainly
not offensive at any extreme or there in, coupled with your 300B
amps what ever you look at, look for a phono pre with a very
flat riaa, ie) neutral. You'll keep the musicality and engaging
traits of what you already have without etched details or overly
warmness that would crush the extremes and the dynamics of
those extremes. I always liked the phono sections that Convergent
Audio Technologies ( CAT ) built into their preamps for that reason.

As an aside you might not want to loose versatility , after all its
the cart your using now but you may have an ear for something else
in the future.........................
