Summer vacay is upon us so let's have some fun. Name a great but underrated pop song and state why it is great and give us a link if possible so we can expand our musical knowledge/tastes. And yes pop music is not Coltrane or even Basie but one can admire the craft. A pop song by definition is:

- Short (the 45rpm single was 2 - 3 minutes)
- Catchy (easy to sing along with or dance to)

I was thinking of Palisades Park by Freddie Cannon because i had a friend in school who could play the cheesy killer organ rift on the organs on sale at the local Zellers and it also contains the brilliant lyrics of:

Took a ride on the loop de loop
The girl i sat beside was almost cute
You never know how good a kiss can feel
Til you stop at the top of the ferris wheel

The almost cute pickup-able girl at a carnival is pure genius for imagery.... but in the end i have to go with the Flo and Eddy classic of Eleanor. Their work with Zappa on the fillmore live album is great but this song is better than Happy Together. The story is the label wanted another #1 hit like happy together so the group played eleanor for laughs with the lyrics and performance. Ya gotta love these lyrics and the falsetto crescendo at the end plus the 'one more time' callout....frickin toe tapping brilliance boyo:

Your looks intoxicate me
Even though your folks hate me
There's no one like you, Elenore, really

[Chorus:]
Elenore, gee I think you're swell And you really do me well
You're my pride and joy, et cetera
Elenore, can I take the time To ask you to speak your mind
Tell me that you love me better

I really think you're groovy
Let's go out to a movie
What do you say, now, Elenore, can we?

Eleanor did well as a single but only #6 on billboard chart

Great track! Never heard it until now.

I know it's gonna get some groans as it's past the 3 minute mark, but I think good vibrations from the beach boys has to be up there...or "cant take my eyes off of you" by frankie valli

On second thought, the frankie track wins it for me. :)

Good vibrations

A great summer POP song? My thoughts are with the Queen herself, God bless her:

I Wanna Be Sedated

Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, no where to go o,
I wanna be sedated

Just get me to the airport, put me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go insane
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my brain
Oh no oh oh oh oh

Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, no where to go o,
I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me on a plane
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go insane
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my brain
Oh no oh oh oh oh

Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, no where to go o,
I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me to the show
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go loco
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my toes
Oh no oh oh oh oh

Twenty twenty twenty four hours to go
I wanna be sedated
Nothing to do, no where to go o,
I wanna be sedated

Just put me in a wheelchair, get me to the show
Hurry hurry hurry, before I go loco
I can't control my fingers, I can't control my toes
Oh no oh oh oh oh

Ba ba baba, baba ba baba, I wanna be sedated
Ba ba baba, baba ba baba, I wanna be sedated
Ba ba baba, baba ba baba, I wanna be sedated
Ba ba baba, baba ba baba, I wanna be sedated

Songwriters: Dee Dee Ramone / Douglas Colvin / Jeffrey Hyman / Joey Ramone / John (ramone) Cummings / Johnny Ramone

Are the Ramones POP?

Even in the broadest sense, it's a stretch to put the Ramones in the POP music genre, along with the likes of Wham, or ABBA.

Dancing Queen.

...this is POP!

OneRepublic
Wherever I go

I know I could lie but I’m telling the truth
Wherever I go there’s a shadow of you
I know I could try looking for something new
But wherever I go, I'll be looking for you
Some people lie but they're looking for magic
Others are quietly going insane
I feel alive when I’m close to the madness
No easy love could ever make me feel the same
I know I could lie, but I won't lie to you
Wherever I go, you're the ghost in the room
I don't even try looking for something new
'Cause wherever I go, I'll be looking for you
Some people try but they can't find the magic
Others get down on their knees and they pray
I come alive when I’m close to the madness
No easy love could ever make me feel the same
Make me feel the same
Make me feel the same, same, same
I know I could lie but I’m telling the truth
Wherever I go there’s a shadow of you
I know I could try looking for something new
But wherever I go, I'll be looking for you
Wherever I go, I'll be looking for you, you
Some people pray to their God for some magic
'Cause no easy love could ever make them feel the same
No easy love could ever make me feel the same
Make me feel the same, same, same
I know I could lie but I’m telling the truth
Wherever I go there’s a shadow of you
I know I could try looking for something new
But wherever I go, I'll be looking for you
You think it's a lie when I'm telling the truth
Wherever I go, I'll be looking for you
Wherever I go, I'll be looking for you
Looking for you, looking for you, ah

One Ton "Abnormal Pleasures". 2002. The whole album. Most underated album ever let alone Pop category. "Super Sex World" was a big hit that I don't really care for. It is the album especially from song number 4 onwards. Just amazing..Zita has one of the best voices ever. Byron is a creative monster ( founded "Lost Fingers"). Great production, mixing, conceptual sonic landscapes. Truly unique. A real Mellotron and with work with legend Rick Hayworth and heck are Canadian!

The Ramones were a radio friendly version of New York punk, as opposed to hard core, with several POPular hits, so maybe that's the connection....?

Plus, it's a GREAT tune!!!

True. Not quite Dancing Queen which is an awesome piece of fluff. A classic pop song has singable lyrics, a catchy beat, and a hook. Come to think of it Wanna Be Sedated and the KKK Took my Baby Away are great tunes to sing along with and dance to, although i prefer Beat on the Brat. Even my 16 year old likes it. but hardly categorized as pop music

They never enjoyed any chart success either #66 i think.

From Wiki….

Quote:
Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms "popular music" and "pop music" are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many different styles.

Although “I Wanna Be Sedated” was very underground at the time of it’s release, it has over the years become a pop(ular) tune! Great song and one of the best live bands ever!

...you can draw a short...straight-line, from Bill Hailey's Rock Around The Clock to I Wanna Be Sedated...musicologically...and sociologically...

:D Well, how about some of the British Invasion groups? "She Loves You, one of the most iconic Beatles tunes. The DC% "Glad All Over", the Searchers, Needles and Pins, the Stones Satisfaction, There are a lot of great pop tunes out there but I did the sixties because it was a time of change in the pop world and things were new and exciting. When echo chambers were the back stairs at a recording studio and tape speed could be changed with just a cheap piece of tape....Now it's more like fluff. with little substance..although there is still great music being made. ...:)
