Setting up my first hifi and need some advice on pre amps. I purchased a PrimaLuna 5 tube amp and didn’t realize it has no volume control. I had plans to add a project classic turntable down the road and use a moon 110 phono stage. Any good options around the $1K budget for a pre amp or a pre with phono stage? Might be nice to have one extra input. I have some mission 701 bookshelf’s until I can upgrade.

Thanks for any advice.

To be clear, do you already have the Moon, if not, is that in or out of the budget you mentioned?

Did not purchase the moon yet, I have the Primaluna and have ordered a project classic turntable. Speaker upgrade is down the road. Not a lot locally for sale that have caught my ear.

At least you ended up with a good power amp!

Hi,

I scanned the current pre-amp ads and there is not a lot for your situation.

1) Many preamps of the last 20 years are 'line level' only and do not include a phono pre stage. So getting a phono stage just adds to your costs. An example would be this one which would work with your amplifier.

2) Generally, tube pre-amps mate better with a tube amp but they cost more. This is not always the case but it is a common pattern. Here is an example with phono stage included.

3) There are some really good solid state preamps that include a quality MM phono input and perhaps a MC input that will likely satisfy your present needs. Examples would be these:

Happy hunting.

Cheers,
David Neice

Thanks, that’s a good list of options.

For a starter preamp, try a Nikko Beta 30 or Beta 40. Those are both good preamps.

Something even better would be a Yamaha C-50 or C-70. These are very good preamps that are better than a lot of "high end" preamps. If you want to stick with a tube preamp, the Counterpoint brand comes to mind. Note that these normally need service and some redesign work which will take your total over your limit, but once the work is done they are keepers. They definitely sound a lot better than most.

One thing that you could consider to save a little cash now is look for a good integrated amp with phono and a preamp output. You could use it to get you up and running and when you have a little more cash sell off the integrated and they are an easier sale than a pre.

Try the Yaqin MS-12B pre. You can get a used example for around $250-300. It has a phono stage plus a line stage. You will want to upgrade the stock Chinese tubes (4).

You might want to also connect to communities such as Tube Rollers and Tube Amps on FaceBook for more ideas. There are quite a number of PrimaLuna users there. Or the Yaqin Tube Valve Amplifiers group if you want to get more information on Yaqin phono stage such as MS-23B or the LesBox mod version, etc. People there are very knowledgeable and helpful.
