I have two questions? Does anyone know of any tube amp kits, that are decent sounding and buildable by a novice. also must be on the cheap!
I was thinking of bi amping, solid state on woofer tubes on treble . How would this arrangment work, sound wise I mean ? Is it even worth the trouble? although I am looking for a new hobby. Thanks

I gave this one to my 12 year old nephew last year and he built it in a weekend. Worked first time and sounds remarkably good.

May be you can look at the Audio Note Kit 2? http://audionotekits.espyderweb.net/

It may not be cheap but all the parts are of high quality. I'm an amateur and I have just put one together over the Christmas break w/o any problem. It may be quoted as a 12~16W single end 6550 tube amp but it has no problem driver my QUAD 10Ls which are only 86dB efficiency.

Hi houndlover74,
You might have a look for a P-P 6BQ5 kit. Things get more interesting when you hit P-P 6L6/KT-66 or 6CA7/EL-34 kits.

Failing that, find an old Eico or Heathkit and rebuild it.

Hey,
If you are still looking for a kit I have been living with the Ella amplifier from Diyhifisupply for a month now and can recommend it. It was my first DIY project and was relatively painless to build. The few hitches I had with it were purely due to my own inexperience and were solved quickly with help from their forum.
I was using the EL 34 tubes in ultralinear mode but have since rewired it in triode mode with no NFB and am using Electroharmonix KT88s, JAN 6SN7s, Jan 6922s. It has definitely surpassed my expectations...
