I recently bought some old 1.6 just to experience the magnepan experience in my home and it blew me away so I bought some 3.7s. It occurred to me that I might be able to have a ridiculous setup similar to the old tympanies from the seventies using both pairs of speakers. As luck would have it I have two huge amps by McCormack so I can run both pairs with a similar amp sound The DNA 500 for the 3.7s and the 225 for the 1.6. Searching the internet I found a little bit on people trying this. Essentially the 1.6 goes behind the 3.7 and at almost a 90 degree angle with a little toe-in. Apparently it turns a soundstaging champ into something out of this world.

Anyone else tried this? The 3.7s arrive Saturday so I'll try it out sometime in the next couple of weeks

Welcome to the Asylum!

I would also love to hear your results combining the two Maggie models.

Magnepan is planning to release the MG 30.7 speakers real soon. It'll be the modern day equivalent of the Tympani, I can hardly wait to hear them. :D

I love my 3.6 and had 1.6 as well, they both are excellent speakers!
Please share your experience with the 3.7 when your run them for a while.

Almost like an M-S microphone diaphragm placement scenario. One set per side, for cancellation or reinforcement, to control the mix.

Holy cow, those 30.7s look amazing. I guess I'll try something like that as well. I think I will have to have the tweeter sections next to each other if I just put them side by side. I could also use an external crossover and just use the 1.6 for extra bass. Anyway, lots to try out and tinker with.

That sounds interesting. I don't have Magnepan but I do have an extra pair of Acoustat model 4 that I could use for the bass along with my Acoustat 2+2. I have a Marchand XM-9 electronic crossover that I could use. I would just have to figure out where to put them. It seems like space would the limiting factor in this experiment. Please post your results.

Hi, I have 1.6 that should have very similar crossover cap values. What brand/source of caps did you use?
Thx!

If anyone is interested as a first try I hooked up my quad esl63s as a woofer for my 1.6 qr with a crossover at 100 hz using an minidsp as a trial run for when the 3.7s come. It's amazing. It's like having a woofer on each channel that can handle the speed of the magnepans

You can see the quad poking out from behind here
