If I was trying to sleep and I had a subwoofer booming away I'd be more than unhappy. I keep late hours and like you I watch movies into the early morning usually 3 to 4 am. I don't listen to movies on a home theater and the TV volume is at the minimum. The reason I keep the volume so low is consideration for my wife who is sleeping in the next room.

as a retired a/v tech, business owner and ex married guy...i sympathize with the man that has this problem.
BASS FREQUENCIES can be a real PAIN...MENTALLY & PHYSICALLY. RIDDING YOURSELF of this problem can be a M0NEY PIT ...or it can be inexpensive (notice i did not use the word CHEAP).
building sound proof rooms can be inexpensive when you realize the costs to the ratio of HAPPINESS in your relationships within the family.
YOU CAN BUY HAPPINESS and the INEXPENSIVE way is by SOUNDPROOFING your spouses/your bedroom.
it is less of a chore...HEAVY DRAPES/CARPETS GALORE/DECOUPLING THE BED FROM THE FLOOR LUSH BEDDING/ETC. and this also takes care of the wifes need to control her environment.
THIS IS THE ROUTE I ALWAYS TOOK...when the AUDIOPHILE section of my life spilled over into my family concerns.
keeping your spouse/family happy should be your FIRST CONCERN.
CHEAPEST WAY OF COURSE...HEADPHONES...GOOD CANS CAN BE DELICIOUS AND SOUNDSTAGE CAN BE JAW DROPPING...
LUCK 2 you...hope you find a real suitable solution.
hope my two cents helps you in problem solving this issuehttp://www.canuckaudiomart.com/for ... 6&t=43022#

Soundproofing is not really an option for subs, as you would need good concrete walls plus tons of insulation to tame low frequency waves, which travel through our regular walls like they are not even there. Headphones, bass shakers, etc are your only solutions.

Utilize this late night/people trying to sleep time to cultivate a more mature taste in films (which don't require subwoofers or earth shattering volumes).

Outside the listening room even a well integrated sub can be boomy.

The title of this thread cracked me up the first time I read it and it still cracks me up! It is just so matter of fact and succinct. And we can all relate! Could be a headline from The Onion.
