What's your definition, size-wise, of "bookshelf" speaker?

If "bookshelf" = "standmount," my vote goes for the rare Tannoy AMS-12A active monitors ($11,000 in 2000). 70L cabs.

Bookshelf speakers are cool. Oversized stand mounted speakers not so cool. imo

Enjoying my Matrix 805's on a shelf. I can see the Twenty (21) series from PMC in my future. They sound and look great.

With the Doctor on this, just what is a "bookshelf" speaker? As I don't think that they are the same as a "stand mount" speaker.

Bookshelf -- The airtight MSM-1 bonsai, front ported and 'tiny'.

Heard at my local when I went to pick up my LP-12, as that is what he was using while running in my new cartridge.

Best sound - tough one...and by 'bookshelf', you really mean 'stand-mount' I think, eh? With that definition my choice goes to my old Harbeth 7es3
Best looks - also tough, but I really like the Diablo Utopia's look...and it sounds fantastic as well:

3A Master Control. 10' servo feedback controlled woofer, 150W plate amp, ferrofluid dome midrance and ribbon tweeter easily capable of cleanly reproducing a 32Hz pipe organ fundamental and reaching out flat to 40KHz. After close to 4 decades, still my dream speaker!

Never really liked small speakers. At this point in my journey I can truly say I hate them.

The scale is simply not there so I don't really care what else is there.

Disliked a few things in my "journey", but can say I've never "hated" anything.

Best wishes on your travels.

Add the word extreme to your dislike and you get hate.

Scale of sound is now 90% on my priority list.

I have yet to hear the Raidho's but I guess they are outstanding. Heard the SF Extrema's quite a bit and they are very...very good.

But the no. 1 'standmount' sound for me still has to be the JMLab Mini Utopias from a few years past. It was a great matched system too running them but there was something about the impact, speed and response that made these speakers special to me. Truly fantastic sound.

Honorable mention to the Dynaudio C1's of course as I am a Dynaudio fanboy. Remarkable balance from these speakers IMO and with the right sub(s) can compete with any bookshelf/standmount out there.

I think Monitor Audio's PL-100 should get honourable mention. I love my GX-100's for bedroom listening.

Bookshelf are generally front ported or sealed and "Stand mount" speakers are rear ported, and need a distance from the back wall.

All the speakers above are really nice, especially the ones that MR. A posted.
