This course is offered at Algonquin College in Ottawa. Course code is ELN5528.

From the course description:

"This course deals with the history, theory and applications of vacuum tube audio amplifiers. Participants will reinforce their theoretical knowledge with hands-on building, testing and debugging of a medium complexity tube amplifier and associated power supply. This course will be of interest to electronic hobbyists and audiophiles."

Has anyone here taken it? Would someone with no electronics background be lost?

Thanks

Did they list any pre-requisite requirement? If not I guess it is open for anyone interested.

Too bad when I went to college they didn't offer such course for credit

Is this a night course?

It is offered by the School of Part-time Studies so it should be at night.

There are no prerequisites but I have no background of any kind so I am wondering if I need to do some advance work before starting.

This course is part of a 'Electronics Hobbyist' program that consists of four courses. The other three are:

Printed Circuit Board Fabrication For Electronic Hobbyists

Transistor Shortwave Radio Theory And Build

Crystal Radio Theory And Build

It seems that you can take any of the courses in any order you wish. There does not seem to be a certificate/diploma for completing all four.

While the cited information remains on the Algonquin site, the course catalogue for current and future semesters lists no such offering. I called the School of Part-Time Study and left a message regarding the possibility of future offerings. I will post the response.

Regards,

Barry

I just spoke to someone in the Part Time Studies group. She said that it won't be offered in the spring/summer timeframe :( . I'm told that it may be available in the fall depending on instructor availabilit/interest.

It's 45hrs and it's a hobby course so likely no pre-requisites.

I'm stoked for this :D

We should definitely make our interest known. I think that most of these courses frequently only have 8 - 10 people so we may be able to justify it all on our own.

Yes, I agree. I explained our interest, and the size of the Ottawa hobbyist audiophile community, to the Registrar's Office. I am awaiting a call from the course coordinator, Wayne Dalrymple.

Regards,

Barry

Well we're four so far. I might be able to scare up a few others too. As for making our interest known, some well timed email inquiries might be useful. I can't find an email address specifically for course availablility however there is a form page at

http://www.algonquincollege.com/prospec ... tForm.html

Certainly if they know about it now they'll at least be able to plan for it and locate an instructor/prof.

:D I also left a message with the registrar office about my interested in the course but they have not called me back yet. I've also sent an email to Wayne and the Part-time program (admin). Hope they get our messages

Wayne's email: dalrymw@algonquincollege.com
Part-time program: PartTime@algonquincollege.com

I emailed Wayne last week and here's his response:

-----------
There are no prerequisites(although basic electrical theory(ohms law) would help).

It has been scheduled for the fall. The capital requirements could be significant for the college because of the LAB(Build) part of the course( tubes and power supplies to drive them are expensive)....but you learn by doing. I see the course structured as part theory(Lecture) and Lab(Build).

ELN5528 561 30 Vacuum Tube Amplifier Theory and Build T2XX,T219

This has been loaded; the lab space has not been assigned however due to our present space constraints it will probably be on a Saturday.
Look for it in the on-line catalog in June/July;
as long as the college is in a break even position, they will run the course

Wayne

Pass the word to others who may be interested.
-----------

There you go...
