My father passed on. He started this whole audio obsession of mine. When I was a boy, he showed me the nuts and bolts of how a stereo works, on his DIY super stacks, with his (now mine) mitsu table. They were two stereo pairs that would mount atop one another, the lowers centered around paper 15's and top cabinets around 12's. They pounded. To a kid it was bliss. My brothers and I destroyed them with "Firestarter" once I hit high school.

We grew up with "Broken hearts are for assholes" at 95db.... Yeah. :)

Anyway, the heart of this system was a mitsu DA-P20 pre and a DA-A15DC power amp. I think they are single sided boards. I miss him. I'm going to redo them from scratch and let it breathe ridiculousness again.

Where do I start? I have repaired TVs for friends, re-soldering new caps in. But never a complete wipeout and repopulate. Assuming I can dig up a service manual, in English, how to begin?

Do they work? If so, leave them alone.

I would have a technician test them before I would tear them apart. You may never get them 'within spec' and in fact, they may not have been 'within spec' when they were new. It is all about listening, not specs.

:) Thanks Jimmi.

An incurable "if they can do it, why can't I?" was fostered in me at a young age. Assume I am on Mars, there are no technicians. This is personal. I'll do the work. Where do we start. I am an Electrician, have meters, know how to run a scope (and will buy one if needed). Where do we start? :)

Well, I know someone (very experienced) who blew off half a finger while working on a power amp. If you don't have them tested for issues, you are just wasting your time. You will likely never get them running properly afterwards without the proper test equipment.
