Just got news from Trends Audio that the ALPS volume pot is now standard on the base 10.2 amp.

Not knocking the little amp - I have a SMSL version (and love what it can do), but - is a volume pod upgrade even worth it (noticeable) in one of these?

Seems like overkill in a cheaply marketed amp.

Yes it is - the Taiwan made one that it replaces had balance issues, and it choked the sound a bit.

Interesting.

Guess I was lucky with my SMSL...
Never had a problem, perfectly balanced from left to right.

I have to comment - these little chip amps really do a good job.
I run mine as a secondary system in the family room.

Just simple a simple Tivoli Bluetooth connected to it - driving a pair of full-range fostex in a pair of side horns.

It certainly could benefit from a different source, but it's just being used for background.

Back to the point, these more simple things often make you wonder if all the fuss for bigger & "better" is worth it

Hi,

Any ideas about the ohm spec on that ALPS volume pot? I've got a Trends amp laying around somewhere and it needs a retrofit. I bought it under the pre-text of using it at garage sales (with a DC/AC inverter) to test speakers. Never happened but a nice thought.

Cheers,
David Neice

Hi,

note to cableguy: many thanks for checking this out. The old Trends stock volume control is pretty flimsy and noisy to boot and I doubt it tracks evenly on both channels. But an ALPS ..... well, that is another story .....

Cheers,
David Neice
