Hello all, new to the site. (Fellow Canadian)

My system is a ext cab truck with 4 boston acoustics S75's running off what ever was the cheapest at the time Sony head unit. And a JL 500/1 driving two boston acoustics 10" G1's.
I ended up finding the JL 500/1 used for 400 bucks just over a year ago. In the future i want to get a better head unit, but its not a priority, so unless i find a good sale or used one it probably wont happen for a while.

Looking in the same classifieds, i found
Quote:
JL 300/4 $250
JL 500/1 $250

Or take both for $450.00

Im decently dumb at car audio stuff, i wired my system, but had a buddy of mine do all the settings (his dad used to be a audio store manager), but he has moved, and i no longer have his advice. I found another guy selling the same stuff for 700 bucks total, so im thinking i could sell the 500/1 and make a hundred bucks or so off it, and use the 300/4 on my system.

Will the 300/4 work with my Boston S75's? If the 300/4 is too powerful, can i tone it down so it does not blow my speakers(then when i get around to it, getting speakers to use the full potential of the amp?)

What your thoughts?

I would plug his 500/1 into where my 500/1 is to make sure it worked, but is there any way to test if the 300/4 works?

Thanks

Rob

I still own both the 300/4 and the 500/1 -- they were selling for about a $1000 each when they first came out. I've owned mine for 8 yrs now and they had never given me any problems, they are as good as the day I bought them. I drive my car to work daily and like to listen to my music very loud. So $450 for both is a heck of a deal. The 300/4 is actually quite powerful, as it has been tested at over 90 wpc rms driving speakers. I would not say they are too powerful for your speakers, because the most important factor is that the amp delivers clean wattage -- it is distortion that usually blow speakers. You could reduce the gain on the amp if you are overly concerned; you could also raise the crossover point if your speakers cannot handle the lower bass signals.

To test if the 300/4 really works, you should be able to also drive the subs with it, and test the front and rare channels separately, but this wouldn't necessary tell you how it would sound when playing the full musical spectrum. You may need an adapter to split the subwoofer signal from your headunit into left/right channels before plugging into the 300/4. You could also contact JL Audio for some advice, they are really helpful people.

Cheers.
