Though I've had a HT receiver for over 10 years, I've never really tried setting it up properly until now.

The AVR is a 12 year old Pioneer VSX-1016TXV. One HDMI out and two HDMI in. Audio is not decoded from HDMI (more on that later).
TV is Hitachi plasma 42HDS69 with several HDMI inputs (3 total).
Sources are over air antenna, Oppo DV970hd and Xbox 1.
Oppo and XBox have HDMI outs.

The AVR has no audio from the HDMI inputs, so audio has to be connected by other means. The AVR is connected to the TV by the single HDMI out to the TV's Input 1. The TV is also connected to the AVR by optical cable from the TV optical out to the AVR optical in port 2 assigned to TV. The antenna is connected to the TV's antenna/cable connection.

With this connection, when the TV source is set to "Air" and AVR set to "TV" we get the TV video signal and sound through the AVR.

The Xbox is connected to the AVR HDMI port 1. With the TV source set to "Input 1" (AVR HDMI out to TV Input 1) and AVR set to "TV" we get video and sound through the Xbox. The HDMI port is assigned to TV.

With the Oppo connected by HDMI to the AVR HDMI port 2 (assigned to DVD) and optical to the AVR Optical port 1 (assigned to DVD) we get video, but no sound. If I reassign Port 2 (see above, from TV to AVR) to DVD we get sound. This is without changing the connections.

So, it appears sound is passed through the HDMI ports from source to AVR to TV, then passed from the TV back to the AVR through the optical out of the TV. I can't get sound from the source (in this case just the Oppo) to go directly to the AVR.

I've tried changing the SPIDF output of the Oppo between raw and PCM, with no effect.

So, is it even possible to set this up so the AVR is the hub? Or do I connect my devices to the TV directly and simply rely on the AVR to provide the sound via the TV's optical out, while I change inputs on the TV to switch between DVD/Game/Antenna?

Or is it just time to upgrade the AVR (or the TV for that matter - though I do like the plasma screen, and don't really want to splash out for something new in that area)?
