Good summary of "surround sound" technology in digital home video.

This statement is interesting :?:
"Digitally, audio USUALLY starts out as Analog -- for example a live performance recorded by a microphone."

Microphones are transducers that convert pressure changes (sound) to an electrical signal.
Microphones do not record anything.

Whether that output from any microphone has a continuous analog path to the recording system, depends on the technology of the time and place.
As an example, the "analog" signal from wireless microphone in a concert hall, may be manipulated by being modulated and even digitized on it's way to the matching wireless receiver.
That signal may then be manipulated again by being de-modulated and converted back to analog, or not 8)

All taking place even before reaching the recording system.

Hi,

Note to jst_canuck. You wrote: '[It's] all taking place even before reaching the recording system.'

Yup. 'Perfect sound forever.'

Cheers,

Yup, I did, except for the "it's" part. Felt good about it until I saw your comment :?

So, what's your point
