My TV at the cottage has HDMI inputs and looking for a simple media player with HDMI output that can play .avi, .mp4, .mkv files from USB drives. This would be a simple system using just the media player and its remote and the built-in TV speakers. Any suggestions for something cheap, easy to use and reliable? I used to have a WD TV Live but I didn't like the reliability. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I use 3 WD Tv Live Hubs all over everywhere, house, cottage, rec room etc.
Have set up others for friends. NEVER any problems.........plays everything.
Try again, get latest generation Live or Hubs.

Do you have a Laptop with HDMI out?

Use your TV speakers for the audio.

That is what I would do.

How about an older smartphone with the USB drive connected via OTG, playing to a Chromecast dongle via a CC enabled media app?

Haven't tried it...just wondering...

Going to try the WD TV Live player again. Picked up one on Kijiji cheap that's newer than the one I had. Thanks for the suggestions.

Any of the so called "KODI" boxes on Kijiji will do what you want. Any Android based tiny PC.

Most basic Android Media Boxes will do the job (some more elegantly, and simply than others)
A cheap Raspberry Pi is the be all end all best bet + you have a full computer too for under 50 bucks I think?

If you want to play back the current crop of 4K HDR releases the best working solution is the Nvidia Shield.

Still, a dedicated computer is *always* going to be better than any media player on the market
