Super rare and not often seen for sale Budgie Step Up Transformer (SUT) from Parks Audio. This item features the amazing Cinemag CM1254 transformer designed by David Geren of Cinemag. This is one of the most highly regarded "affordable" step up transformer ever made!

I purchased this SUT new directly from Parks Audio, but as I now have a dedicated MC phono preamp (a McIntosh MP100) it is no longer needed. I used it for about 50 playing hours before getting my new phono preamp. It has since sat dormant in its shipping box - just stumbled across it and thought I might as well pass it along to someone else. Item ships double boxed with interconnects originally supplied by Parks Audio. Conservatively rated a 9 per the Mart's guidelines, but in essence it looks new.

This SUT has two gain settings and a ground lift switch for maximum flexibility. Just use HI (1:20 ratio) for medium output moving coil carts (0.25mV or higher) like the Denon DL-103, and LO (1:40 ratio) for low output moving coil carts (less than 0.25mV). This will work well with any moving magnet RIAA preamp for a sound quality that is hard to beat using traditional active circuits that require much more attention to load settings due to peaking and clipping distortion.

What are the differences between the standard Budgie SUT and the Budgie CM1254 SUT? The CM1254 transformers have extremely low primary winding resistances (HI is 3.8 ohms & LO is 1 ohm), which directly influence the level of thermal noise that gets injected onto the signal. For those with low-output low-resistance MC carts (under 10 ohms), the CM1254 may be the best option.

Each Budgie is manufactured in the USA by Shannon Parks. The Cinemag transformers are manufactured in Canoga Park, California.
