The Proton was made by NAD as a touchstone, all-in-one receiver, amplifier, CD player and tape deck. These units are high-end and rare - this one is even more so. It's in very good physical condition. Most of these units are missing the front door. This one has the front door still attached and it opens flawlessly. Most don't have the (unusual) ergonomic remote. In this case, the remote is available, is sold with the unit and the remote works fine.
The AM/FM receiver also works well. The Chicago Tribune compared the unit to B&O and said that, at the original $1200 US sales price (actually US$1250), this Proton was a bargain by comparison. It does sound wonderful. The receiver and amp have a built in CD player and tape deck. While the CD player door opens and closes fine, it displays an "err" message. Perhaps the laser needs to be cleaned or perhaps something else needs to be done. Anyway, I don't use it so it hasn't been an issue. The tape deck seems to work fine. There is a phono input for turntable and an auxiliary input. There are preout jacks to use an external amplifier if you want (but I don't know why you would do this as the amp is very good). There are only a few, very minor blemishes on the unit. The AM and FM antenna is detached, allowing for independent positioning. It works fine and is original but was originally attached to the unit.
This unit is sold as is. The unit is heavy as you would expect from a good amp/receiver, so no shipping. Local pick-up is in the GTA - north Toronto.
Two matching Proton speakers come with the unit. They work fine and sound amazing. They are two-way units - see pics.
Price is firm at $100. I have just reduced the price by $150 as I would like to sell this now. As mentioned, the original price in the 1990's was over $1500 CDN at current exchange rates.
