Outstanding sounding DAC - Digital preamplifier in excellent condition. Stereophile CLASS A recommended component. Was going to post at 850.00$ but Bluetooth dongle has always been flacky. I thus reduced the price of the unit by 140.00$, the price of a new BT-100 Cambridge Bluetooth unit. The DAC is still under warranty for almost another two years. Will include original bill of purchase. So there's nothing to keep you from benefiting from the reduced price and then trying to get a replacement Bluetooth unit under the warranty.
Besides Bluetooth issue, the unit works flawlessly and is in terrific condition, as can be seen on the pictures.
If you are not familiar with this unit, it has absolutely breathtaking sound. It's no wonder Stereophile awarded it with a "class A" recommendation. I sold my Simaudio 230HAD DAC to get this one because I found it to be more musical and a more pleasant listening experience.
It has all the the inputs you can think of: Optical, Coaxial, AES/EBU, BNC, asynchronous usb. All inputs will accept hi-res files up to 24 bit 192kHz. If you don't need any analog inputs, the 851d makes a terrific preamplifier. I use it with a Logitech Harmony system and it works flawlessly. Unit is very responsive, never have to push a remote button twice.
Cambridge doesn't benefit of the same reputation as very high end manufacturers but trust me, this particular unit hits WAY over its weight class. As Stereophile puts it, sounds as good components costing 4x more. And that's at its retail price!! Built quality is off the charts in the under 2000$ price range. Here's your chance to get a truly very high end sounding DAC/preamp at a ridiculously low price.
From the press:
"Cambridge shines with an agile sound, lacking nothing in scale or authority. Instruments are rendered with precision and delivered with suitable solidity.
We’re impressed by the large-scale dynamics and the DAC’s punch during crescendos.
We’re pleased with the soundstage too. It’s wide, deep, and nicely layered. Imaging stays stable when things get busy – not always the case with some rivals.
The Cambridge’s tonal balance is convincing. There’s no shortage of refinement either – the 851D sounds silky and fluid."
"The Cambridge Audio Azur 851D has bang for the buck all over the place. It approached the sound of DACs costing four times as much—closely enough, I feel, to satisfy most audiophiles on a budget."
"In the audio world, $1,500 is a modest price to pay for a world class DAC I suppose, but to most out there it’s a lot of money. But anyone who wants to take on digital music seriously, the 851D is so feature packed and flexible, it’s hard not to consider and there is a whole lot to love... I was beyond pleasantly surprised, Cambridge designed and engineered a serious product that most audiophiles would love to own. They just have to remove their CD players and turntables from their racks to make room for it."
"an excellent digital converter, it’s one of the most detailed, insightful performers this side of the multi-thousand pound super-DACs, and many prospective purchasers will be dazzled by its fine sound, wide variety of connections and sturdy build. Moreover, if you’ve already got a power amplifier, it makes great sense to use it as a preamplifier, saving you money and giving better sound along the way."
