My vaunted, venerable Cambridge Audio 640R AVR is showing signs of giving up soon. It’s 10 years old, and owes me nothing. I would like to get into a two channel receiver that offers great sound (I spend a lot time listening to music on this system). I don’t care about surround sound anymore. What I do need is at least one optical digital input, two would be nice, and preouts, and maybe even a separate sub out. Any ideas?

The Cambridge CXA80 is a nice piece in that budget range. $1200 can get you a used Hegel H80 which is a big leap in sound quality.

there are a couple Peachtree Nova 65Se units in the ads. Having owned 3 different Peachtree units, though not this model, I have no hesitation recommending them at their used pricing.

All the stuff I can think of has been mentioned except for NAD C368. CXA are best bang for buck of anything current I know of considering your budget. Good luck!

This is pretty close ... but no pre-outs.

Hi,

Don't get locked into thinking you have to have an optical or coax digital input on the amp. This will constrain your choices. Instead, buy an inexpensive optical digital (PCM) to RCA analog converter for maybe $25 on Amazon or elsewhere. I have one that takes the digital output from a Sony flat-screen and feeds a Trends T-amp that drives bookshelf speakers and the sound is fine.

You can then focus on finding a high quality used integrated amp. My 2 cents worth would be to suggest an Exposure 2010S but there are many other fine amps out there and your choice should be guided by the type of main speakers you use.

Congratulations on joining the move to simplicity. HT is like Windows - it suffers from BLOAT.

Cheers,
David Neice

Look up the Rotel RA12. I had one for awhile and it's a very nice piece with built-in DAC, MM phono and pre-outs as well. Sounded very good with the various speakers I mated it with.

the external converter mentioned would work if the OP is only looking at the optical connection for simply watching TV. He may also be using the optical input for a media streamer that sources his music for this set up. If this is the case his weak link would be the analogue capability of the $25 device and in such a case could be better off in a combo unit. They are plentiful and growing in available options.

You might be able to find a used Creek EVO 50 with the gen 1 Ruby DAC for your budget.
