So simple problem, needed somewhere to store records. Had to be reasonably aesthetically pleasing and living room friendly. I had some surplus purple heart from my last project, where I made the little stereo cabinet for my other system, so I went with that again for edging. I still had the bits from the jig I used last time so that was a breeze for gluing on the edges. Shop grade birch plywood for the structure and used some reclaimed maple for the slats on the rear. Whole idea there was to let some light through, make it seem a bit less like a box and have it be nice enough that if it ever needs to not be against a wall it won't be an eyesore.

Mostly just biscuit joints and a few gussets, clear acrylic finish (4 coats) and that's about it.

very nice piece of work. Great to have the shop set up you have for such projects.
spent last week in your beautiful province. Much to appreciate there.

Nice Cabinet Zeagan. You could build some and get Pat to sell them at Back Alley Music!

Thanks everyone, I'm really happy with how it turned out.

I honestly considered something along those lines but feel like they would be prohibitively expensive, to make it worth my while something like this would have to fetch at least $800. Then again, I've seen people in there spending that much on a handful of records so you never know.

Nice job! I don't believe $800 is cost prohibitive for custom record storage so you might have something here if you wanted to make them.

I would guess you could hold about 300 records in this case. Most people would require more space so I think you would have to design the case for expandability. Stacking them would be nice but I would worry about the weight.

It was originally going to be around a foot wider but the maple I had in hand for the slats was prohibitive. Luckily I just recently got back into putting a vinyl collection together so it should be adequate for a little while anyway.

The plan for when it gets outgrown is one with two rows, amp/Cd player in the middle and CD storage above and below. Like so.

Now you're talking! That's a really great design. I had something similar built for me a few years ago, the LP storage boxes are exactly the same size. One thing to note is they doubled up the thickness of the middle shelf (records are heavy).
