Hadn't seen this posted here yet - I checked their website today and a message indicates they are closed after over 60 years in business. If you were coming in from out of town to check out the McIntosh gear, better change your plans.

Another casualty of the economic downturn.

Wow, I popped in there back in March and they were talking about picking up a new line. They had some nice stuff but the actual store was tired. What a shame; some really nice brands carried.

Another one bites the dust. Sad to hear.

I bought my Musical Fidelity integrated there 15 years ago, but haven't been back since. Not because I didn't like the place, just because I don't buy much gear. Guess I'm part of the problem.

Oh, well. Hope everyone there moves on to new successful ventures.

Terrible news. Just terrible.

I bought a few pieces there when I was a kid. They were always real nice.

So sad to see another shop go down. Not many of us left.

That's sad; I bought my first piece of gear from them in 1980 (a JVC turntable). I spent all my money on the turntable, and looked at the salesman in horror when he said I still needed a cartridge. My teenage noob innocence must have touched his heart, because he pulled a new cartridge from the Shure display and handed it to me. I sure the look of profound gratitude and relief on my face was worth it.

That SUCKS!
even though I do not live there anymore I've been a customer since they were on 7th Ave-still have my Rega Planar 3 and wall shelf I bought there...so many years ago.
Dropped way too much $$ at the 8th ave & 10 st location when they still carried Cary
wish John all the best!

that is a shame. I dropped in there last time in Calgary, just burning time more than anything as my wife and daughter were shopping. I told the salesman that yet he still lit up this AR/Wilson set up they had and we listened and talked for about 1/2 hour.

This is disappointing news. Though I guess in this this day and age, not terribly surprising.

I still have not gotten over the demise of General Audio.....

I'm not sure Millenials even know what a stereo looks like. We know, for the most part unless the older sibling or parent has a system, that they only listen to their phones on ear buds. Sadly, that's the future of retail audio stores.

Sad to see them go. I bought a few new and traded in pieces from them when I was living in Calgary - MF Trivista DAC, ARC preamps, ARC amps, LINN Classic, Cardas cable, Paradigm Reference Servo 15 sub., Classe amps, B&W speakers, etc. I have demo'ed stuffs that I couldn't afford and have spent so many Sat. afternoons when they were still on the 7th Ave. and their new location. They always treat me well. All the best to Padi and the rest.

....Recently had a gathering of musically oriented 16-18 year olds (bands/students/tutors).Although he said it looked different than his Dad's,one guy said my music setup was sort of like his Dad's.Most look puzzled as to why the Exposure mono blocs were needed.Although most were swept up in the music, couldn't help feeling by their expressions, they were viewing exhibits in a dinosaur museum :D

I doubt that there is any single cause to Calgary's rapidly shrinking list of hifi retailers.

Undoubtedly, this is another example of the impact of Calgary's economic downturn. Although we are recovering, the amount of disposable income available to the average Calgarian is certainly not at the the same level it was a few years back. Combine that with general industry trend away from B&M retailers, and the fact that most Millenials seem content enjoying music through an iPhone/Bluetooth speaker....and I guess this is the expected result.

At least the Edmonton hifi scene still appears to be going strong....for now.
