I received the store closing liquidation email this morning. I'm quite sad as I've bought a lot of my home theater gear there over the years and I've always found them easy to deal with.

SPI & Planet of Sound are the only 2 I can think of.

Is Distinctive Audio still around... Or did they close again already?

Yeah. I just checked. Google says it's closed.

Modern Sounds and Signature Audio/Video are one and the same. They just caused confusion by calling their online presence Modern Sounds... but then went and put that name up in their SigAV store too.

The Internet contributed to a changed market model.
Brick-and-mortar types are into obliteration.
Websites rule;
The end consumer can now own double the stereos for the same price, without paying overhead and commission.
That is, if end consumer is an audiophile; the rest have types of Best Buy and Future Shop.
Happen not to like that purchase? Sell it for about the same price, get another model, try again.
Buy used and recycle wisely; grow technical; get knowledge, it pays in the end.

To elaborate further from personal experience of my younger years;
I could've got the same or better sound for about $900 used today that I've got for $3800 (also used, way overpriced) from brick and mortar store in 2005.

Personally...I would not step a foot in the B&M's. I enjoy my hobby and would like to keep it that way.
