Audio is not a necessity...nor a cheap hobby for sure.

I think it's fair to say that when you get to the point that you can focus funds on your hobby you're too old to really enjoy them. Hearing loss, frequent visits to the bathroom

Murphy's Law

the last half certainly struck me that way ... an enticement for well heeled Urbanites for the next big thing to spend the excess $ on. The hand wringing parts about 'betrayals' was also a bit nauseous. As if life was perfect in the era of the vacuum tube.

Best parts were when he wrote about music, not gear.

Money is a discretionary thing...what one values another does not...people always criticize what others spend their money on ...especially family IME.

If my family knew what I have spent over the years on audio they would have a crap.

I don't say anything when a certain family member spends literally a couple thousand dollars on laundry room tile  , but each to their own...

No hobby is cheap.

As someone who lurks on the outskirts of Audiophilia and will barely entertain the idea of spending the kind of money on pieces referred to in this article, the writer totally makes me understand why those with the means to do so, would.

Great read!

Saw that via a Facebook post - and immediately shared it to an FB group who embrace the 'frugalphile' mindset. Love to see those guys get all worked up!
And I can't afford much of what was cited in the article - but I sure do enjoy reading about it.
