So I have been using one of my integrated amps as a preamp and happened to notice by accident that if I turn the power off (put it in standby) it still functions the same. I take this to mean it is running in passive. Any advantage/ disadvantage either way? It is a tube pre, so I assume the tubes are off in standby.

Odd not to have a buffer on the pre-amp out, but not unheard of either. Does this integrated amp have pre-amp out/power-amp in jacks with the little jumpers? If the pre is truly passive, and it's disconnected from the power amp by removing the jumpers, then there's no real problem with running it turned off, and probably an advantage in less power consumed....

What model are we talking about here?
Dave

No jumpers, just outputs for an external power amp. It is the Rogue Sphinx. I found it very odd that it would work like that.

Intergrateds without an active preamp are not that terribly uncommon. If the main amp has a high enough input impedance and enough gain there's no need for additional stages.
