1) Sounds excellent

2) Has Subwoofer hookup

3) Good Phono section

Budget is around $1000. Would prefer a new unit but open to used gear. If cherry picking and doing things separate can keep me in budget and get the sound I want, I'll consider. Is there a pre-amp that would cover these areas?

I was thinking about the Yamaha A-S301 Integrated amp that's getting good reviews. It has the Phono/Sub connections I'm looking for. I'm just hoping it sounds better than the newer Yamaha 2ch receiver I have.

My problem is that I can't find speakers I like (under $1000) that give any 'good and accurate' bottom end. I'm setting up a secondary system for vinyl and I'm thinking doing 2 towers and a sub would give me the complete sound I'm looking for and negate the '2CH only speaker low end frequency problem'.

What say you? Willing to pony up about $2500 CDN tops for everything (Amp/Speakers/turntable) although I'd like to use some of the gear I have first before I spend it.

I have lots of gear right now, but the only receiver I have is a Yamaha RN500 which has the Sub connection and Phono - to be honest, I don't like how it sounds.

Here's most of the gear I have right now:

Yamaha 5.1 Home Theater setup, 5.1 older Paradigm speaker/sub setup. Sounds great. Amp has no Phono.

Yamaha RN500 (has both, don't like the sound - too anemic)

Sansui AU7900 amp (Phono)
Sansui AU4900 amp (Phono)
Sausui TU 3900 & 5900 Tuners
Sansui Linear Tracking TT (Needs repair)

NAD 7120 Receiver (Phono) this little thing surprised me how good it sounds and I got it for $40 maybe...
NAD C340 Amp (no phono/no sub)
NAD Tuner and CD Player

Dual 1209 TT (not tested yet)

Nikko Pre-Amp (Phono - not tested yet)

Any advice? I know most of you guys have budgets much higher, I just can't dream to afford the monstrous gear as I have other expenses on my plate.

Thanks.

Buy some vintage Tannoys .

Apparently a very good little integrated.

It does not have a subwoofer out mind you ... but it does have a pre-out. Any decent subwoofer will probably have RCA line ins that you can use with these.

Just an idea ...

The plot thickens (or gets easier) as I tested out my Dual TT with my Sansui AU7900 and it sounds great... maybe I don't need the amp with a subwoofer now.

AU-7900 is hard to beat regardless of price, same goes for 6900 and 5900 (amps only, tuners are mediocre).
Recap with genuine Japanese capacitors and keep forever.
Recapping part is critical, can make lots of difference.

Bass can be an 'impression', and not specifically the bass itself. Phase, dynamics, leading edges, harmonic structuring, phase alignment with respect to mids, overall coloration of the given amp or speaker or room, or all of it..and so on.

The ear does not work like some sort of engineering spec sheet and engineering weighting in distortions, or measurements. Half the time the two are on completely different pages. If this was not true there would be no debate and all in audio would be solved. Note that it is not and arguments are seemingly more heated than ever.

The ear has an entirely different way of working that does not really relate to engineering methodology regarding acoustics or electronics. They may walk in the same direction in some aspects but the hearing animal (brain/ear) is quite different (than electrical considerations).

The map is not the territory and the name is not the thing itself.

I would agree with you but the AU4900 sounds terrific as well. Seems to have a little more of a rock & roll edge to it. Won't blow anyone's doors off but it has the classic 76/77 Sansui sound. It really surprised me when I bought it.
