Let me start by saying I enjoy tone control and will continue to do so. I have had and listened to many tube setup,s and they are not to my liking. My Klipshorns connected to my Audiomat Arpege sounded good but still had me wanting.
A divorce and many years later has only recently allowed me to dabble in my love of music. I did keep all my vinyl and recently replaced my hk990vxi and paradigm 9se with an old Nikko beta 50 I had kicking around connected to a pair of ATI 1502 amps driving a set of Cerwin Vega vs 150,s. My primary source of music is s project carbon rpm with my denon CD player seldom used. Ok on to the question my old nikko is acting up on the phono after cleaning it's still no good. I like the sound I am getting but looking for something with a good phono section and allowing me tone control. Remote not important and a price under $1000. All responses greatly appreciated

I just took a look through the CAM listings. Wow, not much to choose from right now for s.s. preamps with phono stage. I think I saw one.

The only one I know of that has tone controls and a built in phono stage (MM and MC) is the NAD C165BEE.

Mcintosh C15 (and C712), very hard to find. Not sure if they would be more than $1,000 but they really shouldn't be.

perhaps consider a separate phono pre and control pre. Opens up many more options.
I just sold a B&K preamp for $400 that was a stellar performer that had the tone controls etc, but no phono. Something along that line leaves ample room for a decent phono pre; likely bettering something included in a control pre for your budget.

No affiliation - https://www.iavscanada.com/product-cate ... mplifiers/

They have a Carver, a Luxman, and a Phase Linear that might be suitable.

They are in Surrey BC but will ship and they give each used unit a quick clean-up/tune-up before sale.

So I see a cambridge audio 651p just came up for sale and my old nikko beta 50 is only causing problems on phono. I am thinking this is a cheap and easy fix that may allow me a slight upgrade over what I have. Thoughts?

There is a Classe CP-60 on A'gon for US$850: https://www.audiogon.com/listings/solid-state-price-reduced-2017-11-19-preamplifiers

[Edit]: never mind - I just now saw that you wanted tone controls.

The 2 units that caught my eye listed now within your budget are the Meitner PA6i and the Bryston 0.5. I am not 100% sure the PA6i has phono - but I think it had plug in modules for MC or MM

I would say this would be a better upgrade: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649396100-croft-riaa-phono-stage/

Steve, keep looking....I had a 651P that was totally underwhelming. There are so many units that are so much better.
