Folks,
Came across this list; in an article on Joni Mitchell. Found the influences and the written statements to be very thought provoking. Women, particularly, Joni Mitchell, don't often get the recognition they deserve.

https://www.npr.org/2017/07/24/53838782 ... e-by-women

Enjoy.

Interesting. Problem with these lists is that they can be a little subjective. I would have thought artist such as PJ Harvey or Kate Bush would have had a little more recognition. And where is Poison Ivy from the Cramps who along with her husband, the late great Lux Interior influenced the creation of the whole Psychobilly genre. They also put Amy Winehouse at the top of the list but neglect her Ska influences from bands like The Selecter or The Bodysnatchers. Good read non the less.

Here's an interesting article about a former Blue Note artist, Jutta Hipp...talk about not getting recognition:
https://longreads.com/2017/08/04/the-br ... z-pianist/
And there are many other women in Jazz who've rarely been celebrated in any real way:
Irène Schweizer, Alice Coltrane, Carla Bley, Shirley Horn, and the list goes on and on...too often, I think women in music are more often judged by their appearances rather than their talent, but that's the world we live in...

....i'm not sure any female singer from the 30s on up through the late 70s has received the ongoing homage, across so many genres of music (gospel,blues,doo-wop,C&W,R&R,soul) & by literally a who's who of her peer group...... Sister Rosetta Tharpe.Reasons for her influence begin to hit home, when you listen to her late 30s & 40s music .

Dinah Washington
Mavis Staples
Annie Lennox
Sarah Vaughan
Emmylou Harris
Dolly Parton
