I sure this topic has been discussed often but I felt the need to share my frustration.

I found 2 albums I just cannot listen to without cringing.

Amy Winehouse - Back to Black 24/96 download from ProStudio. Great voice but base just overpowering to the point of distracting.

OASIS - What's The Story Morning Glory. SACD ripped to DSD 24/176.4. Loud, flat and high frequency distortion.

Both of these albums are well known to be poorly recorded. Something Hi-Res will never be able to correct. I suspect in both cases the recording engineer pushed the levels up and out of the way so everyone could do coke off the recording console.

My vinyl copy of Back to Black sounds great so maybe HD Tracks messed with it for the earbud folks.

Phew, my vinyl copy is being delivered today. I was getting nervous that I'd bought a frisbee.

Is that DR scale similar to LUFS?
Probably best to stick with the 16/44.1 CD as I think most are messin with the files.
Artifacts due to misuse of SRC and dither(or lack of).

I've been spending a lot of time on the Loudness Wars website lately comparing various remastered CD reissues to the original versions that were released in the late '80s and '90s.

I was shocked to discover that the 2 versions of DSOTM with the highest DR rating (13) were the 1984 pressing from Japan for US distribution and the version manufactured in the US in the same year. Nineteen-eighty-four !!! To me that's just mind-blowing. Try as they might with all of the gussied-up anniversary versions and special releases blabbity-blah-blah that they couldn't (or wouldn't...) improve on the earliest versions from the dawn of the digital age.

Ridonculous!

My copy arrived and has been auditioned ... sounds very compressed. Voice is there and the rest of the band is at the back. Bass and treble sound rolled off, and mids are just there. Maybe this pressing was mixed for radio. Definitely not something I would play to demonstrate the virtues of vinyl.

My copy is the adult version.

If you mean the one with the parental advisery on the right bottom corner so is mine but I haven't noticed any of the issues you mention. If anything it might be a touch enthusiastic in the bass department and the mids and highs are balanced and clear. Don't get me wrong here, this isn't axactly audiophile quality but it's a great " pop " record.

I use an earlier version of SeeDeClip Duo from this website:

http://www.cutestudio.net/index.php?missing=1

Let’s me analyze music for digital clipping caused by loud mastering. You can then declip either singly or through batch processing. Turns some bad stuff into listenable and can restore lost dynamics.
