Hi Folks

If anyone is sitting on the fence about getting the HIFIMAN HE 400i's - they are on for a good deal at Visions right now.

https://www.visions.ca/catalogue/catego ... randId=794

I sure am enjoying mine.

Been thinking about these. What kind of music do you listen to? What gear are you using?
Any details would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I think everybody on the planet already has one, judging by the number up for sale all the time.

this pricing may change that as most are asking more than the Vision's price.
I purchased a new pair last year for $349; which was a decent buy at that time.
I prefer them over the Grado RS2i I replaced them with; but that is more of a comfort aspect. I don't use cans much so I can't be certain on whether I gained or not in sq. The Grados were certainly easier to drive; could even use them with my iPhone whereas the 400's don't work for that at all. I had a Woo Audio 2 HP amp that didn't impress me with the 400's. Now I just use the output from my pre which works well but again rarely used. What did impress me enough to buy them though was the demo set up with the HiFiman EF2A tube amp.

I'm a little skittish about the 400i because of the reported quality issues. Frayed cables, disintegrating ear pads, ill fitting headbands.
They may be the best sounding headphones ever but if the build quality isn't there then I have to pass.
I'd get them in a heart beat but as I said the build needs to be there.
Any thoughts or observations on the QA issues?

Is Visions an actual dealer or are they selling seconds or refurbished in a grey market? I’ve seen the HE400i go for cheap, but that price is a bit questionable.

No experience with the HE400i but have also heard about QC issues which somewhat reflects my question about them being on the grey market.

It does say on the Visions ad that it comes with a 1 year parts and labour manufacturers warranty.

Perhaps I spoke too soon, Visions is listed as a dealer

http://www.hifiman.com/dealers

Non the less, why are they selling the HP at such a cheap price? Wonder if HIFIMAN knows this…or even cares? I’m sure other dealers are not too pleased.

There seems to a very large gap in the MSRP and the street price.
Amazon Canada, Headphone Bar, has been selling them at $349 for quite awhile.
They list at over $600.
A guy I used to work with got a pair about six months ago and had to return them as the came with old screw on headphone cable connectors.
Not sure where he bought them but his story was the dealer had to go through a bunch of boxes to find him the ones with the updated connector.

Ya I saw that as well. Curious to know what the MSRP markup is. Having managed retail back in my sh!t kicking years I know how damaging it can be to be undercut. I still question whether these retail outlets either received a special deal from the manufacture (or distributor) for what ever reason (could be refurbished with warranty) or are they just taking a loss in order to sell the product.

I suspect the latter but based on reviews, the 400i should sell even at or near their list price.
Canada Computers is selling them for their full list price.
Maybe I'm over thinking this whole thing.
I bought my Audio-Technica's from Amazon on Black Friday at a hell of a discount, based solely on reviews and got a pair of Sennheisers on Boxing Day at a deep discount.
Very happy with both pairs.

That is why I am suspicious of the price. These sell quite well at their list. But there are also many QC problems that have been reported. So what does HIFIMAN do with the defective product that have been returned? The logical answer would be to replace what ever is defective, assuming it is cost effective, then sell them again as refurbished at a lower cost. They can still include a warranty.

Or…..these headphones are grossly marked up which allows for such drastic sale prices. And if that is the case, are we getting our money’s worth should we have paid the list price. Guess that would be entirely up to the consumer.

Gee, that is tempting! The Headfone Shop is selling them for $679.
I listened to a pair a couple of years ago, when I bought my Chord MOJO.
Wish I could remember what my impression of them was, compared to my HD598's, which I also had with me at the time.
As mentioned, maybe shouldn't overthink this one! :?

I paid $349 last year for a new pair from a reputable dealer. This was after the promo that they had on them, so the $298 doesn't sound so far fetched for a Vision's pricing.
mark up is what it is and varies from good to good. A Tim's medium dbl/dbl costs $.19, cup and lid included.
