I learned after ordering this vinyl box set that there are at least two titles in the set that are improperly mastered. Although the vinyl is dead quiet, for example, on the album Heroes, the title track actually slows down about 2:40 minutes into the track. Side one of Heroes sounds ok but the 2nd side sounds compressed, dull and lifeless. Really awful mastering work done on this one. The 1979 release, Scary Monsters, is also poorly mastered, compression, poor separation between instruments. It almost sounds as if it were in mono. This is a moderately well recorded album otherwise so who knows how they screwed up the mastering. Two records in the set was enough for me to return it for a refund and wait till they correct the issues.

I did not get a chance to check out Low or Lodger or the other records as yet but my guess is there will be some issues amongst the rest. I would suggest waiting until the label announces and somehow puts a label on the set so you know it's the correct version.

Was at a friends place last week after his box set arrived from the Bowie website.

Lavishly packaged complete with book the box set is very impressive...however...comparing original pressings to the new pressings revealed compression used on the new recordings which ended any idea I may have been entertaining on purchasing the box myself. :(

Argh, bad news.

There's a new market for vinyl LPs, but does anyone still know how to make themĀ ?

The other two Bowie vinyl sets sound great; they just screwed up this latest one.

Did you do direct comparisons using original pressings?

Yes I did and the reissues were as good or better in some cases.

Apparently Parlophone acknowledged the issue and are hoping to rectify it:
