Sorry if this isn't the right place for this - I'm going to visit my 19yo daughter who has moved to halifax and she want' a decent stereo, which is always something I would like to help with. I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a good store I may be able to pick up an amp, speakers (or cans), maybe tt from. Would be nice to find something in the NAD range for fairly cheap and probably better I don't spend 1/4 of the visit store hopping.

Appreciate any insights.

Peak Audio is good....

Glubes in Dartmouth (off Main Street) also has a good range of products.

I'd call Jody at Brooklyn Audio. You can find the contact info under Dealers - Nova Scotia.

All of the above are great dealers but you won't find much used gear at any of them.
Maybe some budget packages though.
Local kijiji would be the best bet for used.

Hello,

If you want something fairly cheap, meaning, affordable price, you will be looking in the previously owned gears or vintage.

Although an excellent place to shop, Peak Audio in Halifax does not sell vintage or used gears, and the same goes for Glubes in Dartmouth. As for Jody at Brooklyn Audio in Dartmouth, the best place to buy audio, he sometime has used equipment for sale, audio equipment taken on exchange when a client buys new. Jody mainly deal in new audio gears.

I would suggest you contact Jody first, and if he has used audio on hand, it will be in excellent quality.

If you want new NAD equipment, Glubes, and Peak Audio will both be able to help you,

So, looking at used or vintage in a very affordable price range, there is a place in Halifax where you might find what you are looking for.
This store is called:
OBSOLETE Records
Address:
2454 Agricola St, Halifax, B3K 4C2
Phone:
902-407-7228

Good luck...

Awesome folks, thanks so much. Yeah I'm leaning towards vintage, sorry I didn't make that clear. Who knows how many times she will move and change life direction in the next 5 years, would rather not set her up with nice new entry level stuff and have it "left with a friend" in a year.

This place, OBSOLETE Records on Agricola St. in Halifax, is a very small record shop, the owner rents the back area to another person that sells used, and vintage audio equipment. He also sells used vinyl LP, and CD. So, you can find new vinyl with the main owner, and used vinyls with the other guy.

Check him out, you might find some interesting gears for your daughter at a very reasonable price point.

Obsolete is just down the road from Peak so you can do a pretty quick comparison. There is usually a couple complete systems on Kijiji that may do the trick. All three dealers mentioned are good folks.
My daughter moved to Halifax this fall and I’ve gone through a similar exercise. Luckily I was able to gather most of the system from what I already had sitting around.
Are you looking to have a turntable in the system?

Funny no one suggested it, but how about CAM? Simply plug in NS for your search area and see what comes up. Might be some good deals to be found.

I was going to say call Ricky or Julian at the Sunnydale TP, located "somewhere" in the HRM.

They usually offer stuff at "below" market pricing! ;)

if you are driving then you could always purchase locally before and take it with you. even if you are flying then check it in as oversized baggage; I think it cost $25. I did this with a turntable for my daughter and they took very good care of it, placing it in its own plastic bin. it then travelled the same way again when she took it back to Calgary with her. This way you could have any vintage pieces checked over by a tech first, I didn't want to give my daughter a potential problem, and your not not spending your time there shopping.

If you decide to visit Jody, at Brooklyn Audio.....I believe he is still by appointment only.

Also, no trip to Halifax would be complete without hitting TAZ Records!

Cheers, del Sol
