Any tips on how not to put on an Audio Show?

Here’s a few things I don’t recommend...

- Use curtains as acoustical barriers, especially with car audio blaring in the background.
- Audiophiles spent big money for good sound. Why would they want to be subjected to an open convention center, basically full of noise pollution?
- Feature mostly unaffordable gear.
- Just me, I’d probably not allow home windows to be featured either...

I hesitate to even reply, given how limited my experience with audio shows is, but my single experience was just as you describe. Huge gymnasium of a room with 30 foot ceilings and scaffold-like dividers with drapes and 2/3 of the venue devoted to car audio. The sound was so bad that most of the hi-end audio set-ups (e.g., B&W Nautilus, Classe, Sonic Frontiers, et al.) were essentially static displays. There was a new Paradigm stand-mount, like a blinged out Reference 20, with a huge "anticipated" price tag. I had a pair of ref 20's at the time and asked to hear them. The Rep was polite about it but basically said, "What's the point?"

Winter Vinyl,

That’s kinda sad... Especially since some kind of long term contract was signed. Oh well?

Was there at least a bar? They would have probably made a killing there, and give people something else to do.

Good thing, all you need is a some drunk who thinks he knows how to improve on where you positioned your uber expensive speakers.

The only show I've ever been to was a CES show in '99 in the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis. Of course since it was a CES show it was not limited to high-end electronics. The few true high-end manufacturers that were in attendance mostly limited themselves to a static display, which was smart because the place was cacophonous.

I remember that Induction Dynamics had a few pairs of speakers set up in a tent(!) in the middle of the floor in a futile attempt to get them to sound acceptable in that environment. Didn't work.

Licensing the event for alcohol would have been a huge mistake if even possible.

However, had the Wine and Cheese show been in the place of the Fall RV Show that'd be grand.

There would be a cool vibe in a listening room with scotch or a martini. But the liability is ridiculous and anyway, you BUY the equipment so you can do that stuff at home.
