It has started ! Last year was a short movie encoded in DNA, and now music!
Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water and Miles Davis - Tutu, both recorded live in Montreux are now in DNA format, deep frozen and available for the next generations, for thousands of years.
The molecular biologist in me is quite proud. Nothing beats Nature.

Why not? Recording music onto DNA is just showing off – the real purpose is data storage. DNA data storage may not be a solution but it is defiantly on a path where us humanz have to rely less on fossil fuels and mining the earths elements.

That is amazing! Think of the potentials.

And someone paid someone to do this?

Sorry, don't understand why either...
Sure, it's interesting - but, to encode it - decode it...a lot of work and cost to do.
Clearly this is a academic exercise with little practicality, at least for now.

As for Chubby Checker, CSI may just find him now at the crime scene...oops, there goes the DNA evidence ;)

If we used DNA like we use magnetic tape to store data today, it's theoretically possible to store all of the information humans have ever recorded in a space roughly the size of a double garage.

That is why.

Read that article awhile ago. Very interesting! Some may think this is boring – fair enough. But its more than just DNA as a storage medium. DNA is extremely resilient, as we all know from the extraction with our 70k + year old ancestors. But just think of the upkeep of a data centre the size of a 2 car garage vs the ten’s of thousands of massive server farms out there that consume astronomical amounts of energy just to keep them in operation.

You sorta answered your own question.... it's an intellectual exercise .

I think many would argue that intellectual exercises such as this are the fundamental breeding ground for a cascade of discoveries , developments and scientific as well as human evolution... not sure you can associate a monetary value ( or lack there of) to it.

Already obsolete. Just heard the MQA upgrade to DNA and it sounds way better.
