Technics SL1200M3D with a Shure M97XE...

before I know it, at around 2am I fell asleep on the sofa listening to Sammy Davis Jr on LP... I wake up 6 hours later. Record player still ON! ... spinning.... tick...tick...tick...tick...tick...needle still on the deadwax

Is my cart toast? Needle finished? Is 6 hours of deadwax enough to start shopping for a new stylus? :?:

Never had that happen to me before...

You put 6 extra hours on the stylus. That's all. Nothing to worry about.

I would say sober up first....
Then give the stylus a good listen on a goto album.
Then let your ears decide.
Then go buy a Q-up. A must for just this reason!
We've all done it.
Welcome to the Deadwax club...

If you need an answer to show your wife, then Yes you need to upgrade your cartridge.

..........otherwise, no harm was done, don't worry about it.

"Deadwax Club"!! Love it!

Never heard that before...I'm sure at 6 hours for my first initiation I'm a full fledged member by now

I'm actually relieved I'm not the only one with such embarrassing indiscretions...and that I've nothing to worry about.

Well that's the thing, isn't it? Doesn't the dead wax on a Sammy Davis Jr. LP start at the first groove? I'M KIDDING!

True story: Buddy of mine is listening to music one afternoon on his LP12 and gets a call from his fishing buddy, "Springs are running in Georgia Straight so grab your gear, I'll be there in 5". My friend jumps up and grabs all his fishing gear and runs outside to meet his friend, gets back 5 hours later after limiting out to find the arm going back and forth on the run-out wax and a tiny pile of black shavings accumulating on the record label. Keep in mind that this wasn't with a budget cart like a Shure but with a near new Linn Troika! There was no damage to his cart and so I'm sure there won't be any to yours either, so relax. Same thing happened to me with a V15 typeIII, "back in the day" if you know what I mean.

Hi,

Chill man. The stylus is a diamond! They are tough. The run out groove to the dead wax is the last wear point for the stylus. I don't even think you have to count the time spinning in dead wax against stylus use. It is not, after all, riding in the groove, it is just skating on grooveless wax.

Cheers,
David Neice

OTOH, I had that happen on a brand new Ortofon MC30 Super MKII.

The stylus broke off the cantilever. Flimsy house and a target wall rack for a Maplenoll air bearing table. Someone slammed the door when they went out.....and...well... a few hours later,...

I bought it as a close out from a closed store. It was definitely new, so not fake boxed. And I was nearly broke at the time and stretched myself to get it. Just..eat it and move on...

Almost the same feeling I had when I received a nearly new Shinon MV2.5 super. They had a hollow boron tube for a cantilever. Utterly priceless and non-existent in today's market. (the cantilever type, that is)

I did not realize the guard was not the original and was temp fitted. I manhandled when installing and crushed the tip of the cantilever right off.

I once got up from a similar position and soon crawled up to bed. Later that day, after dinner, I came down for another go around in the room - 18 hours clicking in da wax easy!! No impact.

Though I don't think I'd spin any Sammy...I would have loved to have seen him live! My in-laws never tire of describing their experiences of seeing The Rat Pack live (several times no less) on the Vegas Strip in the hey days of the early 60s...man o man...

Was it the gorgeous album he did with Laurindo Almeida? Sammy Sings.Laurindo Plays. Exquisite recording, one voice, one guitar. I sold the CD on eBay a month ago for $50. Sammy Davis Jr had one of the most pitch perfect voices I have ever had the joy of hearing. Get him away from the Rat Pack and the big orchestra and he was even more special.

And then there is the LP12 problem. If it has no discoloration on it... the rotation of the platter is so perfect, you can't tell that it's spinning until you get fairly close.

Sometimes I'd notice 4-5-6 days later.
