Somehow, it sheds a third of the weight?

Different motor and platter = lighter weight. The platter on the GAE was quite nice.

The platter accounts for .8kg*, but the difference is 7 kg. Maybe it's the top plinth material, I doubt the difference in the motor weight is that substantial and the specs otherwise appear about the same.

edit- looking elsewhere it might be 1.1kg

Yup, I gave a couple points where the weight is reduced. That was easy pickins off the press release, not meant to be an accounting of all the changes. Be interesting to see what the MSRP is.

Perhaps they dispensed with the slab of rubber chassis?

The platter is a very decent 5.5 lbs

Turntable Platter: Aluminum die-cast
Diameter:332mm (13-5/64″)
Weight:Approx. 2.5kg (5.5 lb) (Including rubber sheet)

I think it looks identical to the 1210mkII. I know it's not (like the motor's different and the arm supposedly is), but the specs are however. I'd like to see/hear a dbt.

Ok, can someone please tell me what the fuss is all about with these 1200 tables? I have never owned one, so someone who has please give me an idea why people are asking 800-1100 for an old 1200? Or 2000 for a new one? They were Technics top of the line for awhile in the 70's, great pitch stability, great motors, would they best a VPI or Linn, cause people are asking the same?

I was thinking of getting one a year ago, but now it's through the roof, and I wonder if it's worth it.

If a new one is $2700 CAD, what's a mint used fairly new 1210mkII worth? These things have been the darling of the internet forums for the past half decade, even before Technics stopped production. Now Technics has decided to take advantage of it.

One sold a week ago here in SK for the apparent asking price of $600. And that one was not mint by any stretch. The guy sent me more pics of it, looked well used, possibly DJ use. So…..$2700, what has changed since the 70's?

I'm sure it will smoke a stock vintage 1200, but maybe not with all the tweaks that are available for it these days.

What they should do is what they did with the SL-110/1100 and others is release a table w/o arm, as IMO it is still the weak point of the deck. I predict the non-armed version would sell in higher numbers, but maybe volume sales is not what Panasonic is aiming for.

I see it still has the domed dustcover that Che loves to hate....
