I own a pair black 22 ref's and have found a pair of oak 22 ref's that I am considering to possibly replace them. The speakers have some differences though. The oak pair are fastened to their stands with screws while the black pair sit freely on their stands as well as minor differences in the stands themselves. The binding posts and Energy logo on the rear of the speakers are also different. Are these differences based on the finish of the speaker or did Energy change things up during their production run?

If one pair has plastic terminal cups then they are newer, they made a design change later on in production... Models with the plastic cups also have the thicker plastic frame tweeters instead of aluminum. Hope that clears it up.

The oak pair I think are also what Energy named the "designer series" remember seeing it on a packing box somewhere.

Are the stands exactly the same on both the speakers?

Sounds like you have a pair of Reff.-Conns. Top of the line with some differences over a standard 22.

I've seen pics of the reference connoisseurs and these aren't them. Pics coming shortly...

If you can post a pic that would settle it. All the parts from your black 22's will fit your oak ones, the most important parts being the tweeters.

Black pair are the newer gen with plastic cup, older ones are like the oak pair and the real old ones only have 3 front grill snaps' 2 on top and one in the middle at bottom. the oak pair (designer series) were the only non-reference connoisseur to be veneered with real wood, most 22's are black or walnut vinyl wrap with black baffles.

Edited ....all Pics don't load earlier :(

I believe Mikeybc explained it perfectly in his earlier post. Do you want to keep the oak because you like the look better?

Pretty much, ya. One of the tweeters has been replaced. The replacement has the plastic frame so it doesn't sit flush with the cabinet surface and because of that, the grill doesn't snap in on the top two points. Other than that, they are in very good condition.

Mikeybc, not sure if you realize that the third pic (the one with cables attached) do belong to the oak ones.

And thats one thing that I've not been able to be sure of yet, the plastic framed tweeter. I was under the impression that that tweeter came from a less expensive line of speaker that Energy sold. People use them because they fit the cut out but its not the same tweeter as a 22. Am I right?

I don't hear any difference between the two tweeters, but my ears are not the most refined either

Yes I saw that after I made my post and then the other pics loaded, therefore the edit.

As far as the plastic tweeters go it'd they're the exact same tweeter as far as the diaphragm and voice coil go....and should sound the same, just mounting plate is different. I assume they were cheaper to make along with the plastic terminal cups...too had they're thicker.

The sound dynamics horns do fit well and have been used as a replacement but I personally don't reccomend it.

Thanks for the info. The bad tweeter is included with the speakers. Is it possible to swap the frame so that the replacement would sit flush in the cabinet?
