All those old Threshold amps and preamps were winners. I was a Threshold dealer in the 1970's and early 80's, and owned a 400A and SL-10 preamp and I was always impressed.

I love Threshold gear. I also have a Threshold 400a as well as a T3 preamp. From their Forte line I have a model 3 amp, model 2 preamp and model 40 preamp. They are all very well made, sound very good and are a bargain at todays prices.

Just bought a Stasis 3, but have not heard it yet as it is going for recap first. I want to make sure it's up to the task of running my Acoustat 1+1's. would love to hear impressions of anyone who has run this combo. :)

When a friend of mine bought his Stasis 2 I was so impressed with it I put a deposit down on a Stasis 3 and took it home on weekends with the intention of paying it off in installments. I had B&W DM-7 at the time, and the Stasis 3 could toss the little woofers around quite violently without ever losing control. Monday mornings I plugged my HK Citation 16a back in and despite the higher power, it could never achieve the same level of control at high volumes. The recession of '82 hit large and I was never able to complete the payments, but years later settled on an S-150 which is essentially the same amp. Still have it to this day.

These little amps are quite robust. Cool running, always in control and they do exceptionally well into complex and inefficient crossover loads. I no longer have the B&W and the S-150 is not the best match for the speakers I have now (Maggie 2.5r) but I can live with it...easily.

I have a paur of dynaco mk iii which I recently resurrected, as I loved them so $uch. I bought a pair of dcm time windows because I remembered just how terrific they used to sound.

Let's just say sometimes things just sound better in your memory than in real life.

Here's a quote taken from a review I found online:

" But it is at the low end where the 5/500 stands out from the crowd. I have never, ever heard an amplifier that can control woofers the way this one does. Low-end detail from every speaker I fed it to was better than I had heard from those speakers before. It is also one amplifier that has the capability of wiping out a bad load instead of vice versa. "
~JGH

Although this review is of the S/500, by it's description the lineage is unmistakably Threshold. The Stasis 3 had the same qualities but at a reduced power. What I learned from it was that in terms of power, quality of watts trumps quantity.

Nakamichi had a line of receivers with the Stasis circuitry buit in. Among the best receivers I have ever heard. Beautifully styled and great sounding especially with KEF speakers of the day.

The big Thresholds were how first heard the mighty B&W 801 in Matrix guise . Talk about earth shattering experience. Could never afford to play in that league but Iremember a sense of wow that I rarely hear from modern systems.
